I shot my first paid gig last week :D !!! Photos of local bands, in a dark, poorly lit restaurant/bar (aren't they all?) with the main light source being alternating red/yellow/green lights. The 24-105 stayed home, so it was up to the 35L and the 85L to bring in the shots. Attempted to use my flash at first, but the black ceiling + constantly changing lights made that a futile option. So wide open 1.2 and 1.4 it was, and it saved my butt! The red lighting really wreaks havoc with Canon's sensors, so the main keepers were when the yellow and green light was on.

In the small venue, I found the 85L was a little too tight sometimes and so was wanting a 50mm for the portraits, and the 35L, while performing exceptionally, was sometimes not wide enough, so I was wanting a 24mm. That's a problem, because I can't afford the 24 or 50 right now :)

Then sell your 35 and 85 and get a 24 and 50 :D

Yello :)
I'm Jonathan.. It's a pleasure to know you guys here..
I currently own a T1i with 17-40L and Nifty Fifty..
A little voice inside of me tells me to sell the L and get 2 more primes instead..
Can you guys help me with suggestions for all-prime setup to go with my T1i?
Maybe a 28-50-85 trio?
Any help will be much appreciated.. :)

Edit: I'm thinking the 100 2.8 Macro would also be a great choice.. Thoughts?

Cheers! :D

How's a Canon 28mm f/1.8 (One of my favorite lenses), you're nifty (at least for now) and a 100 f/2.

Having said that I have no idea of what you shoot or what your requirements are for the lenses you're looking to purchase, not to mention you haven't stated a budget.

I think that 28 is a little limiting on the wide end for crop. This is why there really ought to be 24mm and 35mm equivalents for APS-C. 22/1.8 - 50/1.4 - 85/1.8 would be a great trio and mimic the "holy trinity." The ultimate lightweight, flexible, fast kit would be 15/2 - 28/1.8 - 50/1.4 - 100/2. That set would be a dream.

But Canon doesn't seem to want my money.

Currently using a Canon 24mm ƒ/2.8, Sigma 70mm ƒ/2.8 Macro and Canon 200mm ƒ/2.8L (Along with my Canon 300mm ƒ/2.8L IS, but that's because I do a lot of wildlife photography and it's usually paired with a 2x extender)

I'm liking my setup right now, you might want to replace the 200mm with a 135mm depending on your shooting style. But those lenses work for me.

Apparently I've been dubbed Foxy.

Thanks for your thoughts so far..
I'm shooting people, mostly.. Family and friends party, casual portraits.. Sometimes I shoot group which is why I'm keeping my L zoom..
I've tried shooting with my 17-40 fixed to 28mm, and it is not wide enough..
Budget wise, I can only afford to sell my 17-40 and get 2 lenses out of it..
Let's say $600 from the 17-40 and get 100 macro non-L for around $400, with a wider prime..
Or should I go with Tamron 17-50 non-VC and 100 macro?
Maybe all I have to do is save some money LOL

Cheers! :D

I want a prime for general walkaround and for capturing pictures of cars+models from time to time, was looking at the sigma 30 1.4 and 50mm 1.4, I'm only leaning towards the 50 since I heard that it's sharper and well...I have a thing for big glass:lol:

It's for a cropped 1.6 cam

^They are about the same sharpness wide open. If I had to pick, I'd say the 30mm is the better lens overall, especially since you have a 7D.

Hey Jason, looks good to me but you are going to have to be one stealthy dude to get a close up of a duck with that F/L. ;) So lets see the duck.

Among these three: 28mm 1.8, 35mm non-L (obviously), and Siggy 30mm f/1.4, which one is the best in terms of:
-Sharpness in apertures wider than 4
-Autofocus accuracy
Thanks :)

Cheers! :D
