I think I may have used the wrong word. The 'compression' stays the same with primes whether you zoom in or out with your feet. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

I will check out the link, thanks for pointing that out

Yeah check that article first, maybe you'll come up with the proper term then.
I'm not good with words myself. LOL
I shoot exclusively with my 85mm ever since I bought it, and before that with my 50mm. Now I kinda forget what zooming is like.
Strange, huh?

Cheers! :D

I'm a prime guy. A hold over from when I shot film with my F1N. I don't mind changing lenses and I love the subject separation that the wide apertures give.

My kit lens (24-105L) has spent a lot of time in the drawer.

I had to post this...I love them on my Canons....

A couple of months ago I found an 85//1.8-H that had been used for video work (as I deduce from the attachment to the focusing ring that would allow a rod to stick out from it so it could be grasped and rotated by a 3rd hand, since removed, leaving the holes you see here below)

...other than that "surgery" the lens is in near mint condition and I expected to AI modify it for the day it would be born again and mated to a Nikon...Since one ring was already drilled, another cut, to the aperture ring, didn't seem too destructive...

I'd been patiently looking for AI mount lenses, should I get a Nikon to go with my Canons, and after modifying the 85 all but my 135/2.8 would be ready for 'the dark side'

...And then I came across this "K" version that had already been factory modified BY Nikon itself...and I had to get it!

...even though I had to get 2 other lenses (the 105/2.5 AI that took the shot of ring neck doves in the gallery forum, and a 55/2.8 Micro that took these photos) and an FE with it...all classics course, AND ALL MINT....but selling them (and my old "H") will pay for the "AI-K"

....and in my right mind I'd keep them all...but I can't afford to keep them and as I have a (less than excellent) 105/2.5 AIS I can let someone else enjoy them...oh well....

Note below the scraped mount...probably from the video camera it was on....

I must admit I do like the fact that Nikkors are so affordable....and sooooo good....

This thread has gone into hibernation, Im here to bring it back. Ive been tormenting myself over which lenses I want to get, and besides options for sports, I wanted a walkaround.

Ive looked at the 24-70, 24-105, 17-55, 15-85 etc.

The more I think about it, I just love the range my 50mm gives. I think it gives me unique shots and angles, that would be tough to replicate with a zoom; basically I just feel like in my gut that for a walk around a prime would be the best option for me.

So now Im looking maybe towards a 35L for my walkaround needs. All I really want is something a little wider than my 50mm, fast, reliable AF, and better build.

Or 35mm F2.0 if you don't want to break the bank

Well, the 35mm f/2 doesn't really fit with the 'Better build' and 'fast AF', but it's a great lens.

Hi... My names Paul and I have serious issues with prime lens addiction. It started with a 50mm 1.4 and since then a 35L has joined the pack. I fear an 85,100 or 135 may join soon. I deeply worry for my wallet.

Warm welcome everybody! :)
@Paul: Try the 85 1.8 on your 50D. I use it on mine, and I love it.
Been thinking about buying the Siggy 30. You guys happy with yours?

Cheers! :D

I started with the 50/1.8, bought a 30/1.4, then realized I wanted an 85/1.4. Not to mention the fisheye I picked up in between there…

This is too much.
