I like manual lenses for the purpose of video. Which is why I initially built up my Nikon kit. They were great for having a small and lightweight video rig. I just have a need to sell it all now that's the only reason I'm offering it.

It's not for everyone, but some of the "better" MF lenses are quite good.

A manual focus lens will be smaller. I give them that. And the focus ring is actually of use. Todays auto focus lenses only have a 1/4 turn for the entire focus range. The 85L is the only exception that I know of with a 3/4 turn focus ring.

The metal bodies of the older lenses are nice and compact. Metal is thinner. No auto focus mechanism or electronics to store within the body either.

Because I have what I need in EF lenses. I cannot afford anything else anyways (at least not the good ones). Buying another $30 50mm f/2.8 isn't really all that exciting or going to offer me anything better. Also, I cannot see how someone could manually track a sporadic moving subject any better than auto focus does. I would have no keepers.

I don't know what 50/2.8 you're referring to... but there are a lot of really nice MF lenses available for cheap, and there's nothing wrong with that. But whatever floats your boat, I prefer using MF, makes me think about my shots a lot more and with focus confirmation and an EG-S screen it's no harder or less accurate than AF would be, even at f/1.4.

All my primes are MF, they do a phenomenal job. I use them for everything also, moving kids,etc...

Now they're not MF by choice but because I can't afford the AF counterparts.

Pretty much. Doesn't mean I would not like to get my hands on a nice manual focus lens. Two years ago a man was selling all this Canon FD L glass for really cheap. Now with the Ed Mika adapters those would have been awesome.

I guess I am a new member of the club. I bought a 6D kit and promptly sold the 24-105. I bought a 50/1.2L and Sigma 35/1.4 and that's all I've got . . . for now. An 85 is imminent. ;)

(I have a bunch of FD lenses on my NEX 5N from 50/1.4 to 200/2.8 and more along with a Zeiss 24/1.8 and Voigtlander 90/2.8)

Look at my gear list. MF allows you to use so many more lenses. Of all the posts here at POTN, lens section, what % are people complaing/asking about AF? I'll guess 85%. Gene

I think you missed the point of this thread...

Who here shoots only primes and can't get enough of the bokeh, speed, and amazing clarity? Who here goes to sleep at night next to a 35L (85L for you chubby chasers) on the pillow next to them? Who here enjoys the compositional benefits of good 'ol foot zooming?

We're here to help each other and provide support for those addicted. The first step is always admitting. :p

So, guys, how/if/why have primes changed your photography?

Happy New Years, fellow future PLA members.

respectfully,
Pat

I found that 50mm and 85mm was way too similar in terms of focal lengths and since you already have a 35 which is also really close to a 50, I suggest that you get a 135mm instead - the L is awesome.
