"...50 and 85 .. too close ... 35 close to 50..." ? I find that jump from 35 to 135 a HUGE jump. And what about otehr afctors than just mm? I have more than on 50 or so lens as they have different characteristics. Gene

I agree. I have the classiv 35/85/135 and I am itching to add a 50. I could even see a 100 (macro likely) being useful.

As for having both... I personally couldn't justify it, and I stuck with the 100L as it's a bit more versatile lens. I found them a bit redundant, but to be honest they both have their strengths, so if you can afford it I don't see why you shouldn't have both!

I practically have a phobia of buying a lens and not using it enough... so I like to keep my kit as sparse as possible... hard to do with a prime-only kit :(

I hear ya. My 70-200 has long been my least used lens. I'd love to convert it into something else, but it was the first big gift my wife gave me. That and every time I do use it I am impressed. I'm slowly moving away from all zooms, but it will take some doing. She always said if I ever sold that lens she wanted me to get something better. What could be better than an 85L? :)

With all due respect I think you read my post incorrectly -

I said the difference between the 85 and 50.. not between a 35 and 135. I knew he already had an 85 or whatever so the more logical thing to do (in my mind) is get a 135 with that money...

I mean... it's the practicality I'm thinking of,

Do you stand 10 feet away from a subject with a 50mm and think to yourself "ooo I need to get just slightly closer" and switch to an 85? or do you take 2 steps forward and take the shot instead?

It's more practical for me to go "ok - I'm 15 feet away from my subject and I need to zoom in real tight on that - switch the 50 or 85 to a 135".

But honestly it's up to your shooting style and if you want a 50 and an 85 go right ahead.. I just find it cumbersome when you're out with a backpack that weighs 50 pounds full with 14mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 100mm, 135mm, and a 200mm.. when I could easily deal with a 14mm, 35mm, 85mm, and 135mm and take steps in between them.

But when I'm really lazy I just slap on the 24-105, hehe

Oh no, not another foot zoom post ! Do some reading, research and learn that moving is not the same as changing lenses, please.

Hey thanks - I'll check that out.

Go easy on me - I'm a newb. :)

I just have never had anyone tell me that I should have shot something at a different focal length unless it's completely distorted like a portrait at 17mm or something.

Didn't realize there was such a nuance in between 35-85.

I could see going 24, 50, 135. Now that would be three very different FL's. However, I'm to lazy to change up my rig. I really only use the 85 when I have to, which is almost never. Heck, most of the time I just grab either the 35 or the 135 and make do. As much as I love primes, I kind of hate changing up. With this said, I probably won't ever use a zoom unless I become an event photographer....and that will never happen! Hmmm....I might grab a wide angle zoom though. Now, I'm just blabbering on...

I'm using mostly my 28, 50 and 135 right now, but I think I'm going to pickup a Samyang 85mm to try it out. I'm not sure I'll like that FL though, I rarely ever used my 50mm on my T2i at which point it was an 80mm equivalent... though my favorite shot ever was at that FL...

I don't mind changing lenses anymore, I just think of it as "reloading"

I'm going to Portugal/Spain with just my 24L and 100L, eeeek! Wish me luck! Haha

I figure I either want to go wide, or tele, and probably won't have time for anything in between ;)

I'm new to everything and only own a kit lens, a 50 f1.8 and a pair of cheap zooms from an old 35mm Rebel kit, but when I lens shop online it seems like I'm really gravitating towards primes. Currently lusting at the 85 f1.8 for my next lens purchase.

I can easily see a prime-only future for me. For me, they make photography more fun.

This is kinda my line of thinking. When i grab the gear and head out i usually just make a decision about what/how i think i will be shooting go for it. This way i can get in the zone with one fl. l really should start carrying a couple lenses though. As far as the 85 mm goes, it sure is a nice fl to work with on FF and allows for great separation. It is just hard for me to grab the 1.8 when the siggy 35 and the 135L are staring at me!

I feel the same way having the 35L and 135L. I have to force myself to put the 85 1.8 on the camera sometimes. But when I do, it doesn't disappoint! I had a great time with it last night and came out with some real winners I think. I did notice the horrible purple fringe CA though. Makes me feel like I should just go 35L/85L/135L and skip the 50L I have been longing for...

I had the 50L. Although, I did enjoy it, I now have the 85L and couldn't be happier! The 85 just has something extra. I love it and I think you would too Randy.
