Hey there,

I just recently bought the Rebel XSi Lens Kit, and I am greatly impressed so far by what it's taken.

I will be looking to expand my lens collection soon, and I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations.

Or even if you could recommend anything at all.

Thanks!

Ah yes, I suppose I should include that!

My bad, I'm sure it's obvious I am somewhat new to the photography scene.

Currently, I am just shooting city events, Family reunions, etc etc.
Nothing exactly specific.

I would like a better lens for shooting city events, can always get a close shot, and something with a good zoom, and wider shot?

I'm not 100% of all the terminology, and as such, my request might sound very odd.

My first two lenses (and my favorites) were the 18-55 kit lens and the Sigma 70-300 DG Macro. The Sigma is absolutely 100% worth the "<$200" price tag. I would highly recommend it!

My current lens is also the 18-55 kit.

I'll look into the Sigma.

Thanks!

As far as relatively inexpensive, but still pretty good, lenses go, the 55-250 IS zoom is a good lens for the price (I shoot almost exclusively with this lens on my XSi right now), and the 50mm f1.8, at under $100, is also often recommended as having good IQ (image quality) for the price. Beyond that, you'll find that pretty much all of the other lenses that are out there are very pricey, in many cases more expensive than the camera itself.

If you're doing a lot of indoor shooting, you'll probably also want to invest in a good flash, since the on-camera flash can be very harsh. Canon makes several, and I believe the speedlite 480EX can be found for under $250. You might also want to invest in a decent tripod (no recommendations from me on that front, I'm using an incredibly cheap and insufficient tripod at the moment) if you plan on doing landscape photography or nighttime/lowlight stuff like fireworks.

In order to get a wider angle, you'll have to spend a pretty decent amount of money - I don't believe Canon (or the 3rd party lens manufacturers) has an inexpensive wide-angle option out there that has good IQ, but if I'm wrong someone here will correct me. :)

XSi w/18-55mm IS, 55-250mm IS
Adding soon: 50mm f1.8, some sort of flash unit

I'll check those one out too.

My flash so far has been very kind to me, but not escaping the harsh reality, haha.

I'll go out tomorrow and take a look at the listed (and hopefully to be listed) lenses, flash, and tripods.

Thanks a lot guys!

EF-S 55-250mm
EF 50mm 1.8

those two should be plenty to start you off...
