A prime or Canon's 17-55. Although if you get the 17-55, you likely won't take it off much.

I have owned and continue to own a ton of lenses. if your main purpose is the grand daughter, best bang for the buck is the tamron 28-75 2.8. Light, excellent images. If your budget allows, can get a canon 24-70, or 17-55 IS. Again for your grand child, the 17-28 mm is not that useful, but the 17-55 is a great general purpose lens on the crop body. I see no reason to buy a 17-40 for your purpose. My Flickr
