Absolutely great lens...

I use the great 70-200mm f/4L IS along with my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens on two cameras (30D and 40D) as my go-to general purpose and travel duo.

I carry the 17-55mm on an Optech strap around my neck and the 70-200mm f/4L IS in a holster case at my left hip.

I can get the 70-200mm into action very quickly since I use a round screw-in lens hood in lieu of the OEM hood. The screw-in hood is smaller and the outfit will fit into a holster case easily with the hood mounted. It doesn't vignette at any focal length on a 1.6x camera but, I don't know about vignetting on a full-frame camera.

However, it protects the lens from flare as well and from damage as well, if not better, than the OEM hood.
I fell to concrete with the 70-200mm + screw-in hood hitting the cement first. The hood was toast but, the lens was undamaged. I needed to replace the six dollar hood. That was the best six-buck accessory I have ever bought.

By the way, the screw-in hood also makes using a CPL easier since you screw the CPL into the lens and the hood into the CPL. Just rotate the hood to rotate the filter.

I use an OPTECH Hood Hat in lieu of a lens cap which is very easy to remove and replace.

Additionally, the 70-200mm lens is not as big and bad looking with the screw-in hood as it is with the OEM hood; so It doesn't attract as much attention.

RPCrowe.... that hood is shorter than the OEM so I doubt it would vignette. On the other hand it will be less effective against flare, not that the lens is flare prone.

Personally I believe the bayonet mounts are better for the lens since they are attached to the outside and are not rigidly connected. A screw in hood would transfer all the energy, in the case of a bump or drop, directly to the lens flange. The difference is probably minor.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.
