I received an EF-D focusing screen for Christmas and installed it today. I noticed that the center lines in the grid don't quite line up with the focusing points. It's slightly off...as in just a hair to the left of the rectangle that makes up the focusing point rather than splitting the center of the rectangle focusing point. I opened the camera back up and tried to reinsert the EF-D to see if it would change, but everything stayed the same. I opened it up again to see if the EF-D could be moved ever so slightly, but it's pretty much set in its place.

This really isn't a big deal. You only notice its off-center if you look for it, but I was wondering if anyone else has the same problem as me?

Thanks,
Bryan

Hi, I checked both the 40D and the 5D.Sure enough they don't align. The 5D is even different than the 40D. It dose'nt seem to effect the focus or the level of the screen. I also wish the lines were a little darker, as MY 61 year old eyes aren't as sharp as they used to be.

Are you sure it cannot be nudged just that tiny bit? I remember spending ages relocating a focus screen I'd removed for cleaning and finding it was frustratingly easy to move, too easy by far - finding the right spot took many attempts.

And this is a problem why?

I hadn't noticed mine was a fraction off until I read this post and I've taken a lot of pictures with the camera since I installed the new screen...

Really? I didn't know the focusing screen could fit in when misaligned. With the 5D I just slide it in and close it when I change screens, I don't fiddle with alignment.

Actually, it may not be the focusing screen that's misaligned. When the first third-party screens came out people had issues with the screen containing the AF point markers getting knocked slightly ajar. It's important to remember that the red boxes in your viewfinder don't actually surround the AF sensors, which are on the opposite end of the mirror box and behind the reflex mirror. The sensors also occupy more real estate than the little red boxes would have you believe.

It's not the focusing screen thats misaligned. As far as I can tell it will always be perfectly aligned when you close the focusing screen chamber shut. Don't bother trying to take it out and reposition it, since it won't help. The focusing screen is very easy to damage, and hard to clean, so exposing it won't help that either. I learned that the hard way . I ordered my screen online at B&H for $35, but if you buy it here its $80! For now I will live with the dust and scratches...

The superimposed plate on the other hand can move around in the camera quite a bit. I was able to briefly correct the alignment by nudging the tabs on the sides that hold the screen in place very carefully with a toothpick, but the next day they were back to their old position. My advice is just ignore it. Unless all you photograph are blank walls, you'll completely forget about it once you start shooting ;)

It's not a problem at all. It was just something I noticed after installing the screen and was wondering if other's had the same thing too. Like you, I'm certain that I won't even notice it in real-world use.

I absolutely love the screen so far. It's an excellent alignment aid and it's very easy to see right through it when you don't want to see the grid. Overall, it looks like a excellent accessory!
