Been after the EW73B lens hood for my 17-85 IS lens and they retail at around £25.00 in the UK.

However there are a myriad of third part hoods available on Ebay, has anybody had any experience of using a third party hood. I cannot see it being that different as long as they are the same physical shape ??? for only £3.99

Would I be wasting my money and should I just go for the Original Canon unit?

Regards

Tony

Canon hoods are one of the most overpriced pieces of plastic I know of, but they usually fit properly (except for the 85mm f/1.8 hood) and do the job as intended. However for that price its got to be worth a go surely :-)

I have bought two of the ebay hoods. One fit perfect, the other needed a little light sanding to put on and off smoothly. I'll take a little sanding over 5x the cost.

I've bought a 3rd party hood for my Canon 10-22 (bayonet) and 85/1.8 (stupid snap on thing)... I would do it again. All fit very well. They don't have the felt liner but, so far, it hasn't presented a problem.

In hindsight, the 10-22 hood is pretty much useless because of the wide fov making for a very short but wide hood.

Some 3rd party hoods DO have a "felt" or "fuzz" lining.

Here is a photo of a 3rd party ES-71 I used to own. You can't see from the photo but it did have "flocking" inside.

The ebay seller was "jiakgong" http://cgi.ebay.com …ories?hash=item3a581ac6f0 (external link)

Name: Lu Gong
Address: Qiling Garden,YingQi Yuan B-104,Yuquan Road,Nanshan District
Telephone: 0755-8297080

Their ad, at the time when I bought it, mentioned the "flocking", but now it doesn't.? ???

Meanwhile, my OEM Canon EW-60C doesn't have fuzz/felt in the lining.

Look at my gear list. I have a dedicated hood for each lens. Many are screw on metal hoods. Many I got from HeavyStar on eBay. They are just fine. I have never seen the lack of a lining in a hood make a difference - other than attracting lint.

I bought the Adaroma version for my 75-300 mm. 15 bucks for theirs of ~ 30 bucks for a canon one. Works for what I need it to do when I use it.
