Well the £3.99 special came today and it's great - very solid build (no felt/fuzz on inside) fits perfectly on the 17-85mm.

Bought from UK Ebayer uk-photogear.

Thanks for the replies.

I bought an ebay hood. It screws on like a lens filter. The Canon one meant for the lens twists on with 1/4 turn and is reversible. I actually had to take the ebay hood to the band saw to cut it down a bit. I didnt really want it to block out light, I just wanted to avoid banging the lens into things and smudging it accidently all the time. For the 5 bux with free shipping from Hong Kong, it was worth it.

For the same 5 bucks you could have ordered a 3rd party hood that also twists on with a 1/4 turn. Additionally, it also allows you to store it on the lens in a reversed position.

My £3.99 special was a quarter turn model, which after your post, I have found also neatly fits on reversed for when the camera is in the bag.

picked up two Ebay Hoods (50mm F1.4 & 28-135mm)

they both fit fine and do their job well. The 50mm Hood, i had to clean up the edges where it engages the lens with a razor blade...other then that, well worth the money spent + free s/h!
