Hey everyone, my sister has an old Original Digital Rebel and is having some issues with it since she got some new memory cards for X-Mas.

Does anyone know is there is a limit as to what size memory card she can use in this camera? She seemed to be ok with 1 and 2GB ones but she got some Kingston 4GB ones for X-Mas which format fine and take pictures up to about 550 then the camera will say that the memory card is corrupted?

The card WAS formatted and tested to make sure that it was able to take / store and download pictures from it but this was the first time she's put a lot on the card.

This just happened a little while ago and is going to see if she can get the pics off with her card reader, the camera itself will not download them.

Any thoughts?

Did you take an absolutely full card with no space left?

When she puts the card in the reader, have a look at how large it appears to be, and whether it's formatted FAT16 or FAT32. The D60 would only accept FAT16 cards and had a 2 GB limit for internal formatting. I thought the 10D, and by extension the 300D, used FAT32 and passed the 2 GB limit, but I could be wrong; I never played much with either of them.

There is a small chance the card has a bad area that is hit at about that part of the card when 550 shots are recorded.

I would suggest formatting the card in-camera (after downloading of course), then put in your card reader and try adding files to it to try and fill it up and see what happens. It might give a card error when it gets near that same spot on the card if the card is indeed bad.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone... I tried searching online and wasn't able to come up with anything and knew that this would be the best place to post the question.

According to the camera it was no where near full but she isn't sure if the counter was coming down or not. It was on 999 for quite some time.

She says that she was able to take about the same amount of pics with her 2GB card that she never had any problems with. This is why we were wondering if there was a 2GB limit or not. I know this is an old camera but I was hoping that someone would remember if there was.

Unfortunately my sister is not very technical at all, she wouldn't know the difference between FAT16 and FAT32 if her live depended on it. I will however try and walk her through it. Copying pictures to the card afterward is a great idea and almost seems like something we should do when we get a new card to make sure all of the bits are accessible. Of course I've never done it before :-)

Compact Flash Compartment

The Compact Flash compartment on the EOS 300D is at the rear corner of the hand grip, the red CF activity light is at the bottom right corner of the four way controller. The door itself is plastic with a metal hinge, opened by pulling back and flipping open to the right. The EOS 300D is compatible with either Type I or Type II CompactFlash cards and supports the IBM Microdrive, it also supports the FAT32 filesystem which means you can use cards over 2 GB in capacity.
