Doesn't look too bad to me, how does it compare with the actual garment?

The original is where the in-laws live. I wish I did have it to compare. What I can tell you is that sweater was red, but it didn't glow in the dark like in the photo.

Did you use flash? cos I see a well lit red top against a very contrasty dark background, and while it is definately a bright red, it is not overpowering the white spots, and does not glow in the dark for me. Silly question but maybe you could check your screen calibration a well? I take it the red is glowing at you even on this forum.

so how do you define a proper saturation point of any color?

I guess that would depend on what the purpose was of the final output. If it was for some lab experiment, then I would be comparing it to a standard color chart under color correct lighting.

If it was a photo to hang on the wall, then it would be "whatever looks good to my eyes". And I say "my eyes" because I am not shooting as a pro, so I don't 'have to' please a customer....only myself.

It's fine, if you tone it down you'll make the image look dull to you because you are used to this version

Huh?

The red sweater on the left doesn't just GLARE at you?

Subjectively, yes, but so might the original.
Objectively it is not over-saturated, that is, there are not vast blobs with R=255.
