Hey guys,

I'm planning on heading out to an outdoor festival, and living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada I know it'll be in the deep negatives (-30 to -40) and possibly lower with wind chill.

I'm planing on staying out there for 13ish hours to take a massive amount of photos, and one thing concerns me.

How will the temperature affect my camera?
I know the battery will drain faster, that doesn't bother me.
But will the camera/lens be damaged in any way?

It will be warmed up from time to time, when I warm myself up, but nevertheless it will be subject to these harsh conditions.

So, just asking if it could be severely damaged in anyway, other than the battery.

Thanks!

The kid with a camera.

I assume -30 to -40 is in Celsius. Not sure how low of a temperature the camera can take. But one thing you want to make sure of is to put the camera in a ziplock bag to keep condensation from collecting on the unit when you bring it back in to warm up.

Yeah, I'll have to pay attention to the moisture and such.

Yeah, it's in Celsius.

I think the batteries would run out quick at that temp. Keep a spare set next to your body and expect to need to recharge often.

I've read (in another thread here on POTN) that at least with higher end Canons (5D, etc.) that it's not the camera itself that's affected so much by the cold, as the battery. And that in extremely cold weather the battery may only last five to ten minutes. So...you may want to buy several, have them all charged, and wear them as close to your body as you can.
