I have seen plenty of homemade ringflashes, and decided to try it myself over the holidays in my spare time. I purchased four items.. (1) A heat lamp housing $6, (2) a 3" septic connecting pipe for $3, (3) 1" wide aluminum bar for $4, and (4) some screws and washers. I already had the aluminum foil, Dremel, glue, and diffusing paper (more on that later).

After some time with the Dremel, i had cut out the back of the heating lamp housing and fit the septic connector inside it. I surrounded the septic connector with aluminum foil, and cut an additional hole into the heating lamp housing for the flash. I for a diffuser, i used some diffusing paper that i had pulled from an old laptop screen. it wasnt large enough, so i had to cut it to size and as a result there is a small seam on the front (doesnt seem to affect light output though). I also found an interesting material in the laptop screen which split the light at a 45 degree angle, so i slipped that into the flash-hole as well. a little more work with some duct tape, aluminum foil, cardboard, and the dremel.. and the ringflash adaptor was done.

i mounted it all to the 5D using a Calumet flash & umbrella holder (already owned it), and the aluminum bar with holes drilled through it. Its a bit heavy overall, but it works.

All in all, around 5 hours of work, and decent results. The light is still pretty biased towards the bottom of the ring, though im not sure how to make it much more effective. See photos of the rig and sample shots below.. comments and suggestions are welcome.

That umbralla bracket is a great idea. Yeah, there is quite a bit of dead spot at the upper ring. Check out this Youtube video, the guy use reflective tape inside..

Cool idea. I have one of those shoplights (who doesn't right?), so I'll have to try this out. Thanks.
