Happy New Year everyone!

I picked up my new flash this morning and could not wait for my beautiful wife to get home to try it out on her. Keep in mind my skill level is that of an amatuer and am looking for C&C. I quite like the "up close and personal" feel about this one, how does the lighting rate???

Cool looking picture, but you cut the chin off. It still looks good to me though.

I wondered if anyone would raise that about the chin. I haven't cropped the image at all, it was a tight shot to start with, but I see your point, I've cut the top of the head of also, I guess one or the other is OK but not both??

Is there a good reference somewhere regarding guidelines for general potraiture?? I will try again with not such a tight crop and see how that looks. I just really like the feel of the closeness, particularly the connection with her eyes, that's what got me hooked in the first place:D

Thanks for the comment, it is nice to get feedback

Darren

You did a great job capturing her eyes. You have a very lovely wife! :-)

Thank you roentarre, I'm not a huge fan of skin smoothing myself, it is what it is and like you said it can have wonderful texture.

Thanks roops, I am a bit of a sucker for eyes, I think it is possibly my wife's most defining feature.

I think cutting the top of the head off in portraits is normally ok, but cutting the chin off results in a funky looking photo.

I like the lighting, it really draws you to the eyes and everything fades out (but isn't indiscernible) in the background
