I went through this myself. Depends of you need a faster lens or longer lens.

I chose faster, for the shallower DOF. Buddy of mine swears on his 24-105 IS. What do YOU want/need more?

There are a million darn threads on this - do a forum search and you'll find a wealth of information.

As a summary, most people tend to find the 24-105L to be a better walkaround due to the range and IS and the 24-70 better for weddings and portraits.

There's LOTs of discussion on this one Dew - it pops up regularly and a quick search will reveal more than the following:

For me though and the way I shoot the answer is obvious: the 24-105. I've taken 10,000+ shots with it and have not been disappointed. - Stu

If you get the 24-105, you'll like it but then you'll end up selling it for the 24-70 later on :D

I loved it as a walk around lens. The 105 was just long enough and the IS was pretty sweet.

However, as others have said, I moved more towards portraitures and traded the 24-105 for a 24-70.

That can be a contradiction depending on what one shoots.

Flip a coin. Seriously. Polls have shown these two neck and neck. People can argue either of these one way or another.

For me it was the other way around.
I bought a 24-70 and hated it from day one.

Sold the 24-70 and bought myself a 24-105
and it was love at first site.

Good luck.
