My local Duck pond has been frozen over for more than a week now but it makes for some nice photo opportunities.

I really like the moorhen on 2. You can feel the cold!

Very nice shots. I hope people are remembering that those birds need food at times like this and are bringing them something to eat. :)

Nice shots

I'm planning on getting the 1.4x for my 400mm, looks like IQ is still impressive judging by these, does it improve the MFD?

No, a TC won't improve Minimum Focus Distance. If you are shooting birds fairly close though, like under 30 feet. you defiantly want to invest in a set of Kenko tubes. One of the best kept secrets in photography. Kenko tubes have no glass. They are just extender tubes with the contacts in them so the lenses will report to the camera and autofocus. They don't eat the light coming through, but they do magnify the image that hits the sensor, so it appears to magnify, but with no loss of IQ or shutter speed. The downside is, you do lose Maximum Focus Distance, so they are only good if you know you are going to shoot fairly close.

Hi Roy

They are all fabulous shots but I really do love the first moorhen shot.

Colour and detail on all of these are wonderful :D

I have just bought a decent tripod and head to hopefully help me get to grips with my 400m a bit better.

Linda

Thank you Linda, I appreciated the comments.
I am sure the new tripod will help a lot, especially when using a 1.4tc.

Roy, great set of images, as Mitch said, "try to get some food to the birds.
They will be happy, and stick around.
By the way, I really like your MoorHens.
