Cat, did they lose their disks or just never got any when they purchased the laptop?
Edit: Never mind I went back and read.

It kinda crashed, and to 'fix' it, they erased everything off it. Everything. Then realized that they don't have any of the discs that came with it. They brought it here, and i got Windows XP to load and install from one of my OS recovery discs. But there are no programs on her computer at all... I can't figure out how to get the wireless to show up or anything. Also, I get a pop up now that says to activate windows within 30 days. So, my question is: To activate it by internet, I have to be able to connect to the internet. And it won't. I've got it hardlined into my modem, and it does nada. to activate it by phone, I'm not sure what they are going to ask, so I'd rather not. SO... is putting my copy of Windows on her computer because she lost hers... is that illegal? Am I allowed to do that? It's not pirating, it's mine. But will it activate on a computer that it wasn't intended for?

People rave about the 45 focus points on the 1D, I feel like I am cheating myself by using one. Anyone have any interesting techy thoughts on focus points and choices? The 1D has a custom feature that will expand the focus point on long zooms when you zoom in. If you have picked the center point and zoom in it will expand the focus to multiple center points instead of one essentially making a fatter center focus point. Kinda neat. It depends on what you're shooting. BIF, A/CIF I'll use multipoint or RoF. Most anything else, I'll use single point with joystick active. That's especially important if you're using an UWA since focus-lock-recompose for something very far off-axis can throw your focus off. short5 wrote in post #7041874 Thanks Chris I too will move the ONE point but never do the "ring of fire" thing and was wondering if I was some how cutting myself short. I prefer to do everything manual or semi manual just because if I know what I want I might as well tell the camera to do it instead of letting the camera guess at it KWIM? I may be wrong here and need to trust the camera more? It seems most shooters use the center point. Yeah. And FLR, and then wonder why their lens is front-focusing. DoodleBunz wrote in post #7042143 How do you set the focus on the *? I'm new to this, don't flame me....I wanna learn! lol CF 4; set it to 1. I'm one of hte hard core who don't use it. Most of the time I'm in single-shot so it doesn't offer any real benefits; if I'm in AI-Servo I really want it to keep focusing up until the shutter releases. cfpackerfan wrote in post #7042251 Sorry, topic hijack: My sister has a Toshiba laptop. But will it activate on a computer that it wasn't intended for? As long as you used their product key, not yours, you'll be OK. Most computers nowadays have a Windows Cert. of Authenticity sticker right on the machine. You get the product key off that. You make the call, tell 'em why you can't activate on-line (no network connection) and they'll give you some humongous number to type into the computer and you're set. And Toshiba's website has all the drivers you'll need available for download. Put 'em on a USB key and you're set. But even going in on-line to activate you may end up calling Bangalore if the machine was previously activated. Jon

I have mine set so that all I have to do is move the Multi-controller (joystick thingy) to select the point I want. Sometimes this gets bumped accidentally and I notice I'm not on the center point (which I use 99% of the time.) If you have C.FnIII-3 set to 1 (Multi-controller direct) or 2 (Quick control dial direct) then either of these might be getting bumped accidentally, causing a different focus point to be selected. On the 40D there is really no need to put the AF on the * button because it has the separate "AF-ON" button. I select focus ponts with the joy stick. Crissa

Not sure what the state of medical transcription will be in a few short years. My wife has been in the transcription field for 15 years and makes a very decent living doing it. Starting out the salaries are better than average but not great. You really make the money when you go off on your own and getting paid by the line. My wife gets 10.5 cents a line and she types very fast. Couple that with a few macros, expansions, and templates I helped her put together, $35 to $50 and hour is typical and many times she does a bit better if the work is very repeditive. Not sure why, but call me JJ.

The one real downside is that it makes for a horrible home business because there is so little to deduct so Uncle Sam really stickes it to her. I don't think that the industry is going to go away any time soon. There have been several attempts to offshore the work but the quality was so horrible that hospitals became worried about liability issue. Then HIPA came along and even less is going off shore. The other major technology that was tries is speak and type. It too has failed horrible as the doctors just don't take the time to speak in a manner where the computer can make sense of what they are saying. Also, liability becomes an issue. This is a legal document and the hospital or doctor is on the hook for accuracy. That sounds like pretty good job security then! Kuddos to her! Blog

Kuddos to her! Not so secure. Contracts can be as short as a week and sometimes several months so she is getting new contracts all the time. But once you get networked into the business it becomes self sustaining. She sometimes is working 12~18 hour days for a month and then has three weeks without a contract. Actually the business model is very much the same as a photographer. Not sure why, but call me JJ.
