55-200 problems

Hello all

I just picked up a cheap 55-200 USM lens and the AF won't work. I have a feeling that the motor might be toast. My 300D will still take pictures with it on manual. Is there a possibility that the motor might not be toast and that it could be something else?

Thanks

Yes.
Among other things (probably), it could be:
- user error (such as having shifted AF activation to "*" and forgetting the fact)
- bad body
- bad connection
- bad switch on lens
- bad lens electronics

NO wonder you got it cheap, there is no 55-200 lens. But, seriously, try it on another body.

thanks all

I took it to the local camera store and tried it on a different body. On both (mine and the store's) bodies the lens would not respond to the body. You could hear the cameras trying to talk to the lens with no effect. However, I had a fun night of MF whilst watching a basketball game.
