NO

D3000 - Rebel XS - Sony a230 [Point and shoot step-up]
D5000 - Rebel T1i - Sony a380 [Amateur]
D90 - EOS 50D - Nothing [Serious amateur/enthusiast]
D300s - EOS 7D - Nothing [Semi pro/serious amateur Crop]
D700 - EOS 5D Mark II - Sony a850 [Semi-pro/serious amateur Full Frame]
D3s - EOS 1D Mark IV - Nothing [Pro high speed camera]
D3x - EOS 1Ds Mark III - Sony a900[Sort of..] [Pro high quality camera]

Er, Sony's a550 needs to be on a par with the T1i, too -- I'd say the a380 is more like an a230 than an a550 (or at least somehow in that low-end wad makes room for a third option).

Sony's lineup is convoluted becuase you're right, the a550 is a little closer to the Rebel/D5000, but it also costs more like a 50D....

Sony cuts their market up too much...they have the 230, 330, 380, 500 and 550 all occupy roughly a similar market...

They cost: $450, $550, $700, $750, $950 respectively

the 230 and 330 i guess target the XS

the 380 and 500 target the T1i

and the 550 is attempting to take on the D90...and the 50D...

Theres rumors Sony is going to be adding a 6 series to this mess too...And bringing out a successor to the a700 [And of course, they really need a true PRO camera..]

And I thought that canon had a pretty crazy lineup, Sony on the other hand is alot worst - lol

Seems like Sony released an awful lot of DSLR's with minor differences in price (Smells like the General Motors strategy). Flooding the market strategy may be what's gaining them marketshare in the DSLR market though (most likely unsustainable in the future). Nevertheless, the upcoming EXMOR-R sensor based DSLR's will definitely net them some higher end users..

Indeed...admittedly the a450 actually is interesting to me...by doing away with their complicated live-view AF system they improved the viewfinder from the sounds of it ;)

Of course they also did away with the 3" rear LCD which was a mistake imho..

It's not a big deal; my next camera (whose purchase timeframe is still undefined) isn't going to be an entry-level body, and my main reason for posting with the emoticon was just to say that heh, and I thought maybe I knew the market.

Read an amusing summing up of the Mac versus PC debate a day or so ago. To paraphrase:

"Mac users are concerned about being trendy, being seen to use something different to the unwashed masses. PC users on the other hand want something that works, are not at all bothered what others may think".

Interestingly the reason I bought a mac after probably 10years or more using PCs (and still using them in the day job), was exactly because I wanted something that worked.
The same reason why I have a nokia phone instead of an iphone - regardless of how much trendier the iphone might be!

My gear: Canon 20D, 70-200mm f4L, 400 f5.6L, 1.4x telecon, Sigma 17-35mm f2.8 DG HSM EX, Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di LD. Assorted other stuff

D3x - EOS 1Ds Mark III - Sony a900[Sort of..] [Pro high quality camera]

Sorry but you need to take the a900 out since it was essentially replaced by the a850. Actually it was sony's way of lowering the price of the FF dSLR by $1000 and saving face. Taking 2% accuracy off the viewfinder and firmware change to limit fps to 3? Hardly a new model.

Take a900 out of the same class as the 1Ds3 - it's an insult to have it there!

It was an extremely poor classification. The a850 and a900 are nearly identical and they should both be put next to the d700 and 5D2. That's why.

I thought this was a Canon board?

Ok, I admit it - it is a bit refreshing to review what the other manufactures have out there. Looking at where they are taking their products gives clues to where Canon might also go. IMO Canon has been lagging a bit vice leading the entry level and prosumer segment.

The only thing worse than forgetting your favorite lens, is not bringing the camera in the first place.

Feburary 9th canon is having announments... and other one late march early april.

I have big expectations for the 60D. It would be nice to see some of the most high-end HD video capabilities, also a flip out screen would be so usefull to get some of those shots that we would be required to stand on something high or lay on the ground.

I'm wanting the video capabilities and the wireless flash controller (ST-E2 is ancient and I don't like tying up a flash just to manage the problem).
