Except you can right now buy a 7D for about $1425 body only and so what do you think you could get it for in another 6 months? About what the 60D will be going for at release?

The 550D not having MA is not a small thing. I could not imagine having 18MP without it as there needs to be a good bit of tweaking to get all the lenses dialed in for ultimate sharpness/focus. No point in having all that resolution and have your lenses blur it up a bit. IMO.

My bet is most buyers of the 550D will use the lower line of lenses so they will not need MA as these cheaper lenses are a bit soft any ways. Which is a waste too me.

So I see the 550D as performing, IQ wise, no better than the 50D, perhaps worse if the lens won't cooperate, at about the same cost and without MA.

Yes it does shoot video but IMO Canon is offering a very limited use feature in HD video due to it's cobbled feature set/design. Comparing the 50D build quality and ergonomics to the 550D is IMO worth the $100/150 price bump. even w/o video but with MA.

So what should Canon do?

Eliminate the 550D/ Ti series altogether and reprice the XXD series at the rebel prices. They will more than sell enough to offset the higher cost as building more brings production costs down. Imagine a 50/60D at a Rebel price. It would bring Nikon to it's knees.

As it is right now Canon has too many models at too close a street price that it makes no sense at all. ??? To me any ways.

I agree for the most part. But would recommend a different solution. The XXD series is simply being pinched off right now.

Perhaps that's the real plan? No 60D ever. 7D establishes the new line of Prosumer cameras. Let the 7D price drop to about $1200 by Spring 2011 and introduce 7D2 at $1500.

Letting the XXd series die along with it's better layout and dual dials is worse than leaving it and selling it at a higher end Rebel cost. I think the XXD line is a much better body than the Rebel line so this is what I think would bring Nikon to their knees. Not the other. There is little chance that Nikon could afford to do this as Canon can out build Nikon any day in volumes. With those volumes comes lower costs which could be passed on. As more bought Canon, Nikon would be losing sales and thus they would be placed in a worse financial position. Canon could just about drive them under if they wanted to dump XXD's for Rebel prices. This is the bread and butter for SLR's not their high end stuff as they are not selling anywhere the #'s to stay alive off of those sales alone. Doing this would also force Nikon to raise prices on other things as well and the gulf between Nikon and Canon would become even greater cost wise. The market would leave the much more costly Nikon as the difference would not be worth the money. IMO it would harm us too as Nikon is now forcing Canon to make better cameras. Lord knows Canon is deaf to us it's users. But Nikon? They seem to look at what they are doing and then follow in their own way. Sort of a backhanded attempt to improve their cameras.

For those wanting a 7D for less than $1699 let your fingers type google and you will find prices less than $1699. Now are these folks B&H? NO. But these stores are in New Jersey and are owned by the same guys that their other sites charge more for. You will have to decline the extra battery and tell them you know for a fact that the factory battery lasts longer than 20min. Just make sure the 7D is in the full factory package and comes with a USA warranty and it will be fine. Or you can continue to pay full retail it is your choice.

This announcement date may be for another body like the 5DmkIII or perhaps the long lusted after 3D which body has more guesses than a movie involving Genies.

Yes.

According to that ancient, totally unreliable, uninformed rumour, it's SD only...

Well given how the lineup is i feel this is realistic now

I really feel the xxD will compete with the D90..

By "Compete with" I mean it will kick the D90s arse

Actually thats my first theory..

My second theory is that the xxD will be something...interesting...

a Magnesium bodied, relatively compact APS-C DSLR, I feel it will axe the frame rate (possibly being no faster than a rebel) and maintain a small yet ergonomic package...Basically, a T2i with improved build, two dials, and a viewfinder that offers a few of the tricks from the 7D (the gridlines and adjustable AF point sizes) but still with 9 AF points...sensor will be the same as the T2i, Maybe 4-5 fps however

Its competition will be the EVIL cameras and D90, Except with a proper viewfinder...

It will have a companion EF-S 35mm f/1.8 lens that will be very small and compact....maybe a near pancake-design

Imagine, a GH1 competetor that uses EF lenses ;) And has a real viewfinder!

Maybe a drawing will help..

I did the same thing! And it's freakin' great! I love this camera!

Now if the stinkin' weather would lighten up, until it's indoor projects. Actual today I'm going to use the 8fps to try and catch my dog jumping up for a frisbee.

Canon Rumours added the following

This is a CR2 source that has been right on multiple occasions and missed a few.
Next week I’m told we will see the following.

Camera:
1Ds Mark IV at 32mp. No other spec details.
There will be no 60D at this time

The 1Ds is the camera that makes most sense to be announced. What canon did with the T2 is essentailly what should have been in the 60D. I dont see a 60D ever coming out at this point.

There will be a 60D; there would be too much of a gap between rebel and 7d otherwise

For those who were hoping to buy a 60D, what will you do if it's not released any time soon, or not at all.
I'm looking forward to the 60D release, but if it's not coming, I will stick with my good old faithful 30D (still going strong),
The reasons I will not purchase a T2i (550D) are, size, no top LCD, no rear Quick Control Dial, no Macro Focus, only 3.7 fps, and a plastic body. That's why it's a Rebel (550D), I'm not knocking it.
The one and only reason I will not buy a 7D is, I can't afford one.
I think the xxD range of cameras are in the price range of many keen armatures, and as much as we would like all the bells and whistles of the 7D, it's something that maybe some of us can do without.

Brian

Focus on lenses. I've been contemplating this a bit today and the 7D just isn't doing anything for me (not saying there's anything wrong with it, I'm just not feeling it) so I'm sticking with my Rebel for right now and just wait for the 5DmkIII to come out, or just save up and pick up a 1DmkIV when the funds are there. Nothing other than build quality is compelling me to upgrade since I haven't experienced better AF (other than on a D300s and 50D which tainted me forever lol).

What is it about "build quality" that would compell you to spend so much more? I know the camera feels a lot nicer in the hand. There's that sense of durability you get from it, but I had to send my 40D in for repair three times. If it were about build quality, I'd take two rebels over a 7D any time.

Dave_C,

I think you answered your own question. You had to send your 40D in three times. That's the difference, thats why the pro level bodies and L lenses are built like tanks and part of the reason they are more expensive. I'd go for build quality every time. To use a car analogy; Porsche not Lotus every time.
