Except you can right now buy a 7D for about $1425 body only and so what do you think you could get it for in another 6 months? About what the 60D will be going for at release?
The 550D not having MA is not a small thing. I could not imagine having 18MP without it as there needs to be a good bit of tweaking to get all the lenses dialed in for ultimate sharpness/focus. No point in having all that resolution and have your lenses blur it up a bit. IMO.
My bet is most buyers of the 550D will use the lower line of lenses so they will not need MA as these cheaper lenses are a bit soft any ways. Which is a waste too me.
So I see the 550D as performing, IQ wise, no better than the 50D, perhaps worse if the lens won't cooperate, at about the same cost and without MA.
Yes it does shoot video but IMO Canon is offering a very limited use feature in HD video due to it's cobbled feature set/design. Comparing the 50D build quality and ergonomics to the 550D is IMO worth the $100/150 price bump. even w/o video but with MA.
So what should Canon do?
Eliminate the 550D/ Ti series altogether and reprice the XXD series at the rebel prices. They will more than sell enough to offset the higher cost as building more brings production costs down. Imagine a 50/60D at a Rebel price.
It would bring Nikon to it's knees. As it is right now Canon has too many models at too close a street price that it makes no sense at all.
To me any ways.I agree for the most part. But would recommend a different solution. The XXD series is simply being pinched off right now.
Perhaps that's the real plan? No 60D ever. 7D establishes the new line of Prosumer cameras. Let the 7D price drop to about $1200 by Spring 2011 and introduce 7D2 at $1500.

And has a real viewfinder!
