Army Train

I guess this fits into "Transportation". I just had time to get a few shots with out any planning. These are just "snap shots".The train had just about passed in front of my office when I noticed it. The sky was very overcast and about to rain. So the lighting wasn't too good. These have very little pp to them. There may have been 100 or more cars of this equipment.

M1 tanks were railroaded all over Germany back in the late 80's early 90's. Was a sight to see.

It's cheaper than the fuel to drive them to their destination. In the case of overseas deployment, vehicles are often pre-deployed or shipped to be pre-positioned. And it is still done the old-fashioned way, by train to a port and ship to wherever.

Brings back many memories.

I remember seeing trains like this lots of times in the past.

A train can carry 2000 of cargo 300 miles on 1 gal. of diesel. (Per a fiend who is a dispatcher for BNSF)

Even the cars belong to DOD....nice catch.

Nice photos. Living only a few miles from an Army base I see them bringing equipment (tanks, big trucks, etc.) in on trains 3 or 4 times a year for their "war games". It's pretty neat to be sitting on the highway watching Abrams stroll by. Off-roading on the tank trails is fun as well.

They let you go off-roading on the base? Coooollll......

Yes, it is a semi-active base that is divided into zones. If the zone is not closed you can go on any existing trails. You must attend an orientation class before you're allowed on the base. They also allow hunting and fishing with a special license. You find some interesting things while driving through the woods there.

Fort Hood in Texas allows deer hunting every year. They have a lottery for permits and I won in 76 or 77 and got my first deer there.
