Well I have my XTI and the 18-55 non IS version that came with it. Is the 18-55 IS worth the upgrade. I have read that it is way better than the non IS version. I would like to get the 17-55 f/2.8 IS but can not afford that right now. I just got the 70-200 f/4 L which is awesome. Now looking to upgrade the 18-55 non IS. I guess the question is that really a upgrade? The 18-55 non IS to the 18-55 IS?

I was also looking at the 17-85 IS but it is much more than the 18-55 IS and I am not sure that it is much better for the price from what I have read.

Thank You

Yes, it it worth upgrading from the 18-55 to the 18-55 IS. Everyone who has done it seems to agree.

Other good alternatives are the Tamron 17-50 2.8, Sigma 18-50 2.8, and the Sigma 17-70.

Yep, it really is worthwhile upgrading to the 18-55 IS. I did that a year ago and I'm very pleased - it's much sharper, especially wide open, and the IS works very well on still subjects.

The 18-55 IS is great value for the money.

Thank You for the reply. The f/2.8 would be great. How do you like the 17-50 you have? I will have to check the price on those.

The price to upgrade to the 18-55 IS is pretty cheap but not as fast as a f2.8

I currently own 17-85 - it's a great lens but wouldn't pay (now) the extra money for it.

Do You have a flash? I would rather pick up a flash + 18-55 IS rather than the Tamron.

A great combo is the 17-85 + flash because its longer that 18-55 and still the flash works fine with this focal lenght (85).
