I'm a nature lover and an engineer but not very creative.

I want to get a lens that will allow me to photograph a perspective that our eye's normally can't see so I'm considering the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro and the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. I'm hoping this will fire up some creative neurons.

I guess the real truth is that I'm afraid that I wouldn't find the 10-22mm focal lengths very useful. I love other people's wide angle stuff but what if I don't have the "eye" for that? I almost never use my 18-55mm IS. Is there a more useful lens for $660? I've wanted this lens for a long time but I'm starting to get cold feet.

I love the idea of a sharp, fast macro because my 70-200mm's closest focus of 4 feet is annoying, but the 60mm f/2.8 seems almost redundant, but I love the shots I took with a borrowed 60mm EF-S.

I know these lenses are entirely different, but I'd like some thoughts.

If you're unsure about a lens, I suggest renting it or buying used. It will hurt much less if it turns out that the lens is not for you after all. Used lenses that have been well cared for hold their value very well.

I can't speak for the 60mm, but I love my 10-22mm. I use it on 1.6x and 1.3x sensors and I couldn't be happier. With the UWA, you have to get close to make good pictures and I think that's what I love about it. I've always bought into the mantra that "if it doesn't look good, you aren't close enough".

Macro work can definitely give you a new perspective.

Here are some of my earliest shots with the 60 macro:

Macro can be a whole 'nother world to most people. New perspective? I think most any lens can give you that actually.

I look at my 10-22 also as getting in REAL close and using the DOF that it can provide for interesting perspectives.

Too many people think ot it as a panorama type lens which it also is but it has far more uses than that, imo.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.
