I have had a silver XT for a couple of years and tried to learn every detail of it. I constantly here bad things about the silver cameras. The searches I have done mainly mention they look non-professional. IMHO I get some pretty good shots from my lowly XT. It has trekked with me across gator infested swamps, up glacier clad volcanoes and everything in between, yet performed flawlessly every time.
Is it just the chimping silver P&S crowd that is causing the bad opinions?

Not meant to be too serious, just wondering.:)

My silver and black Leica Rangefinder has never gotten a bad rap.

I't's just fashion.

We had a silver framed TV until it died recently. It suited the room being silver, but it proved impossible to get silver and we have had to put up with a very dark grey.

I teach sailing and even sailing waterproofs are sold in "this years colours". But if all you want are highly visible and servicable waterproofs, last years are half price!

Silver is OK, but just looks cheap IMO. Once you go black, you never go back :)

Who cares what color it is, as long as it takes good images?

The bad connotation is caused by those photographers who you mentioned, those who mount a kit lens onto a silver Rebel and suddenly think they are a pro wedding or sports photographer or something. Don't worry what others think, if it's given you great service it deserves its place in your bag

If it bothers you, one option is to wrap it up in gaffer tape, I recommend Permacel Professional Grade Black from BHPHoto http://www.bhphotovideo.com …el__Pro_Gaffer_Tape_.html (external link)
(see my review by Dawei :D)

Another option to give yourself a laugh and to show those elitists is to mount a really expensive lens like a 200 f/2L IS or something and walk around with it at a Photo meet :D :D :D and silently crack up at the stares you get

I am also a mountaineer and all of my gear is "last years colors". I save up to 80 percent by not being fashionable.
Now all I need is for Canon to start making the 1DS Mark III and "L" glass in silver. ;) Then I could really be unfashionable with all that extra cash in my pocket.

It is just a trend, I must say I never liked silver phones, I'd rather get a white or whatever other than silver... but with the cameras, the black and silver lens/camera kinda looks funny. :-/

Don't say that, just look at what Sony has done. As if white wasn't bad enough.

I have the 300D, the only colour available at the time, and it takes amazing pictures. Very happy with it. When I ordered my XSi, (still waiting for it...)I actually debated if I should order it silver, but then I settled for black. I couldn't care less what other people think of my gear.

It's Canon's fault for selling the Silver cheaper to ladies as a handbag accessory.

I kid you not ~ this came up some time ago and someone provided a link ~ a super trendy Japanese Teenager with her see through plastic bag and a Silver, KISS digital in it, along with her makeup and lipstick ...

Whilst the preference for Silver or Black was there previously, Silver preferences suddenly took a nose dive and the divide became a chasm. :)

In the old film days I always preferred chrome and black. Black bodies got shabby much sooner. Most other pro's went for black, but who cares, cameras are not fashion items.

I prefer silver or some other non-pro looking color; because many of the local resorts and some other pro photographers dislike photographers shooting in their space, a less "obviously professional" color would be great for me.
