The 35 Zeiss is much more like my MP100. The Zeiss pop and 3d look. The 50 is more like 2 or 3 lenses in one. If you shoot it around 4.0 or slower it has the look of the 35. If you are faster it takes on a more film like quality and backlit wide open the non corrected elements are really something. It can make the backgound almost look like a painting. Black and White is really cool looking on the 50. The 35 is much easier to shoot fast because of the focus and it is more consistent from shot to shot.

I agree. I have read that this lens does not have the same 3d effect as other lenses such as the 21 or 35. But the 3d effect in my opinion is actually quite pronounced with the 50mm if you stop it down somewhat. In my photos I have seen it at f2.8. In fact it's my preference to shoot with that aperture on this lens. I've read reviews that once you stop this lens down it gets sharp but then you can get the same results from other brand 50s, like Canon. I could not disagree more. The rendition and character is spectacular and is quite uniquely Zeiss. Even images from L lenses look "flat" once you've experienced anything from Zeiss. I don't think the reviewers have properly field tested this lens. It is an outstanding lens in spite of a few shortcomings such as performance wide open at MFD. That is my experience with a full frame.

QUOTED IMAGE
f/2.0

Great example of the 3d effect with this lens. I've read that this lens lacks this quality, but its not true, and it manifests at 2.8 quite nicely as seen in your photos.

I think the lens has great capability for "3D" wide open too. It's just harder to focus and there's some veiling.

I think the well is a good example.

Also, this B&W is at f/4 and the well still really stands out.

Now, it's a close fight between the 50/1.4 vs. 50MP for my next lens.

Take both, if possible.
The 50 MP is stellar at close distances - but damn heavy.
The Bokeh of the 50MP (especially with main object in front) is in the blurry bokeh backgrund not as nice as the 50 1.4.

And the 50 1.4 is light and small!

Had the 50 L and sold it (to soft).
50 L and 50 1.4 ZE are quity similar in (worse) close distance behaviour.
But stopped down, the 50 1.4 takes the lead in far distances around infinity. Much sharper than the 50 L there (for less cash) and even sharper than the 50 MP (but only on far away ranges).

If 50mm is your focal lenth (and if you dont need AF there), a change from 35/2 to 50 MP makes absolutely sense.
