sorry for the noob question but

this guy is selling a "Canon f-1 with 50 mm 1.4 and 135mm2.5" i dont need the camera so i offered to buy the lenses seperately. i just realized that the camera is film. but will those lenses still work on my rebel 450d xsi?


AHHH ok nevermind... i just was told no bec its an FD mount and mine is EF

Actually the answer is yes.
There are adapters out there.

I imagine... I always wondered:
can you give me a short list of lenses for which is really worth it? I often see them on craigslist, maybe I'll jump in someday.

It would only be the big white Ls, and even then you'd need one of the good adapters, not a cheap ebay-special. The problem (as you may know) is that the FD-mount registration is shorter than the EOS, so the lens would need to be fitted closer to the sensor than the mount permits. Therefore you need a lens in the adapter. This magnifies the image by something like 1.25x (and thereby loses about half a stop), and means that unless the adapter lens is a very good one you can lose a lot of the original lens quality. Because there are lots of high-quality older lenses in other mounts that can be adapted to fit EOS without a lens, it's normally not worth messing with FD-mount lenses.
