Got off an entire THREE shots of this guy before he flew away and one shot was :( these are HAND HELD with a 100-400 L. Not as sharp as I would like but I guess they aren't bad for being hand held.

Comments and Criticism much appreciated.

Here is the original size with just a bit of PP(not very good at it yet)

Same pic as above but cropped(I think I did a 100% crop in LR v2.2 but I am not sure :( )

Pov is nice, I don't think the sun was in the best position for a great shot. But as we all know that isn't always possible. Good effort & a nice find for sure.

I can't get anything hand-holding this lens, but I'm a wimp!! I like the pose in the first crop and you got a wonderful catchlight in his eye. This is better than anything I have of a Juvie Bald Eagle!

Since your shooting in Manual Mode, you need to over expose it some when it's side/backlit. That will blow the sky a bit, but expose more of the shady side of the bird and bring out some detail. Or, shoot in Av Mode and dial in some exposure compensation. After you get some practice at it, you will know who far to compensate so you do half in the camera and get the rest in post processing.

As others have mentioned, the light direction was not cooperating this time but you did get an unobstructed view of the whole bird which is awesome. I like the first pose best due to the face getting more of the light. As an additional option to what Mitch suggested, you could also lighten up the shaded side of the bird a little in PS to possibly bring out a little more detail although this can bring out undesirable noise, too.
Good work and keep shooting!
