Just got my nifty fifty (50mm 1.8 II) yesterday. Man do I love this lens. Great for the money and super sharp. Love the apeture range. Think this is going to come in very handy for portraits and some general shooting.
Here are some pics. first is my boy no photoshop straight conversion from raw and second is a 100% crop.

Hard to beleive that this lens is only 70 bucks! The jpeg conversions saved for web do not do justice to the detail and sharpness captured by this lens.

Wow! That's sharp. Ordered my nifty 50 yesterday from B&H, and since it would be lonely in the package all the way from the USA to New Zealand, I got them to throw in a 70-200 F4L, polarizer, and a 1.4 teleconverter. Wasn't that kind of them.... Now I sit here clicking on the tracking button on the pc, waiting...waiting...

Nice shot, cute little guy. How do you like your Tamron 28-300? My hubby just got one yesterday as he needs a portable, lightweight zoom lens to carry on his yearly motocycle trek. We have the tamron 28-75/2.8 which we love and hope this other Tamron does a good job as well.
Thanks....

actually love my tamron 28-300. Lightness is one of the things that sold me on it. I find the lens to be a bit slow apeture wise at the top end and things can be a bit soft, but nothing a little usm cant cure. dollar for dollar it was a good choice for me considering the reach and weight.

What is the big craze about this 50mm f1.8? Is this the only range that it can zoom? I am a newbee and am clueless about this "nifty fifty". Can someone school me on this one. Thank you.

Lens is not a zoom. Fixed focal length. Called a Prime. What else do you need to know?

I love the 50. It is an awesome lens for soooo cheap. The only other lens I have right now is the kit lens. The 50 stays on my camera about 99% of the time. That will probably change when I get either the Canon 70-200 f4L or the Sigma f2.8 version.

Hey Dante, thanks for the review of the Tamron 28-300. I think it will work out fine for my hubby to take on the motorcycle trip and you are right about the dollar value. We plan on upgrading to a couple of L lenses in the future but are happy with what we have for now.

If you have a bit of cash to spare, I bought the 50mm/1.4 and it takes the crispest pictures.... my hubby has the 1.8 and I can see a marginal difference. Since I take lot's of wedding pics/portraits, the difference was important to me. See first post by Dante with a 1.8 vs. my post with a 1.4.

the answer its :
a) allow you total control of the deep of field.
b) Its a normal lens, matching like the human sight.
c) Its largest apperture in a lens (1.8) making him super fast.
d) Its very usseful for portrait exclusivelly; but obvious only a
pro or advance amateur apreciatte this features.

The control of DOF is really a killer aspect. Speed is another. Price? Worth every penny. Was a bit concerned about what it was all about before buying it as the feeling of :"what can you get in glass for $70?" kept going around in my head. The all plastic housing is a concern, but I dont think it will be geting to much rash from useage considering its small size. SOme voiced concerns on the 1.8mark II on focusing or lack thereof, but I have not had any problems and have found AF speed to be quite good on my 20D.
