Lens is not a zoom. Fixed focal length. Called a Prime. What else do you need to know?

Of course it is a zoom lens, you zoom with your feet! ;)

Whats the difference between the rebel 300 kit lens 18-55mm and the nifty fifty. I understand about the use for portrait and foot focus. Is it that better of a picture?

I seem to be the only person who didn't like the lens. Had one for a few years, sold it as I was totally uninspired. Maybe I just had a bad sample.

Now the 85 1.8, there is a thing of beauty. :)

The zoom covers the same focal length as the 50 so the 50 offers nothing there.

However, the 50 will provide a sharper and more contrasty image than the 18-55. It will also allow you to take photos in much less light than the 18-55 as its maximum appeture is much wider. The wider appeture also has the effect of better blurring the background so for potraits you can easily separate out your subject.

The 50 1.8 is a popular lens because for just $70 it offers a lot of the quality you'll only find in lenses that are several hundred dollars or more.

Thanks for the help. That's a good answer. The 85 that you mentioned, that one kinda covers a little of everything?

again the 85 is a fixed focal length so it doesn't cover a little of everything cause there is no zoom, its like the nifty fifty only with more reach...Really nice lens too, wish I had one...

Just got my nifty fifty (50mm 1.8 II) yesterday. Man do I love this lens. Great for the money and super sharp. Love the apeture range. Think this is going to come in very handy for portraits and some general shooting.
Here are some pics. first is my boy no photoshop straight conversion from raw and second is a 100% crop.

Hard to beleive that this lens is only 70 bucks! The jpeg conversions saved for web do not do justice to the detail and sharpness captured by this lens.

Dante:

How do you get your pic's to blow up so large on the forum? When I put mine on they shrink down so small because of the 100kb maximum? Whats the secret?

Mike
