I browsed some old shots and found this picture of a stork whose wing look like being operated. Could this be so?

Asian openbill (Anastomus oscitans) pictured in Thailand in December 2007.

#1 Wings down

#2 Wings up, see the "stitching/scar" in the left wing.

See also this Wikipedia picture (external link), does it show something similar ...

I would think it more likely that the bird cut itself on a fence or something sharp in the water. I doubt a surgical scar would have the curve at the end for one thing.

Nice shots of the stork. Did you try and look at it expanded in image software? It does look like a scratch, although what a scratch on feathers looks like I'm not sure.

Here's the detail. When highlighting the injured area, it indeed looks like a scratch or wound. The wingspan of this bird is about 1.5 meters, so the injury is maybe 10-20 cm long, but didn't prevent flying.

This case might be more natural that it in the first instance looked like.

I today got a small book "A Photographic Guide to Birds of Thailand" and <here> (external link) is a scanned page from this book. Looks very much the wing has a 'natural scar'.

(No, I don't believe I have taken a picture of the same bird as in this book ...)

Well, it seems to be a regular mark on them, I googled asian openbill storks and looked in images and there are a number of them showing that mark. :)

I looked in the images section of google, there are also several more images showing almost the same mark. It must be something on the bird.
