Spent the morning at Sax Zim Bog looking for great gray owls, and didn't see a one. I even took a little stuffed great gray owl with me for good luck, but it didn't help! So I saw three gray jays visiting a deer carcass. It was fun watching them. I was set up for chickadees and redpolls, which are much smaller than a gray jay, and had to back up for these. It was -10F there this morning but nice and sunny. There were three other photographers there, all Nikon shooters with big black lenses, from Detroit who flew in yesterday and are leaving Tuesday. They were pretty cool and I helped them out with some info about the area. You never know who you'll run into in the bog!

Beautiful shots Liz. How big are these next to a Thieving Jay? :)

Thanks all, yes they are the same size as a blue jay. The photos are deceptive because they're all puffed up and they have a smaller beak relative to the rest of their body. The first time I saw one, I was surprised at how large they are.

In a week I'll be in Florida photographing scrub jays. That should be a nice change from the -10F it was this morning. ;-)a

Excellent shots Liz! Sometimes it seems like our secondary subjects can be just as rewarding, as is the case here.

I bet you can't wait to head to Florida ( and the warm weather). I used to have Scrub Jays all over my backyard when I lived in Austin - you'll have fun pursuing them.

Rub it in. In a couple hours, I'll be down at the river shooting eagles in +10 temps. :p
