So I got a $75.00 gift card to B&H for Christmas and am having trouble deciding what to do. I currently have the EF-D focusing screen, 33' remote control extension cable, and a couple 4G Extreme III CF cards on my short list of things to get. I was pretty sold on getting the screen and a memory card until I started thinking about the Nifty Fifty after reading the sample thread. It would basically only put me out of pocket by about $15.00.

The issue I have is that I have been telling myself I was going to save up for the f1.4 version due to the USM and better build. I don't have any prime lenses currently (my only lense I have is my 24-105L) and am struggling with whether or not it's worth it to make the purchase just to start experimenting with. If you were in my position which direction would you lean and why? Thanks in advance for your opinion's.

I posted this here because it involved a lense but if it's in the wrong forum by all means Moderator's please move it to where it fits in better. I'm still kind of new here.

I just picked up the nifty this past week and I am having a blast with it. It hasn't come off the camera since getting it.

You can't go wrong with the nifty fifty IMHO. It is my first prime and while I've heard it is VERY fragile, I haven't found that to be the case, yet. It hunts a bit in low light, but for under a hundred bucks its a great lens.

I'd get the Nifty. I had mine, used it for 8-9 months and sold it for almost as much as I paid for it. You really won't lose much if you decide to upgrade and sell it later on. I sold it because I found the focal length a bit too long on my 20D, but that was just my personal preference.

how long would it take you to save for the 50 1.4...if it's more than 6 months i'd say go for the nifty fifty...you could probably sell it for 20 or so less than what you paid...it'll be like a 6 month rental for 20 bucks...not bad

If you want advice on how to spend your money, you've come to the right place. Folks here are very liberal with OPM (other people's money).

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go ahead and put one on order since my main priority for saving up lense-wise is the 70-200 2.8IS and not really the 50 1.4. I just thought this would be a quick and cheap way to start experimenting with using a prime. Thanks again everyone.

That is a great move, the 50 1.4 is definitely worth every penny
