Hi All

I spent a few very chilly hours looking round the VSCC Test Event at Brooklands this afternoon. The light went from just about OK to very poor IMO so a mixed bag on the cards but here are a few that caught my eye after culling the obviously aweful ones

The first two were taken on the banking area where 'they' had a sort of 'gate & slalom' course to negotiate. Not all them managed to follow it 100% correctly.

They had one test I think called "Slip Away" and this grassy section was the last part ~ the guys with the Austin 7 based cars really threw them around ~ lovely tail slide on this one as he came round and recovered it.
IMAGE: http://1stdesignit.co.uk/vsccJan09/IMG_5824.jpg
Another test was a combined 'gate & high speed manourvering' ~ lots of concentration here.
IMAGE: http://1stdesignit.co.uk/vsccJan09/IMG_5838.jpg
Even a couple of the "heavies" got thrown around ~ this one caught my eye because the car interior and driver (windscreen reflections aside) are sharp but everything else is in motion. (Same test as above)

Only one 3 wheeler Morgan I spotted ~ also getting the treatment
IMAGE: http://1stdesignit.co.uk/vsccJan09/IMG_5871.jpg

Lots off other togs there and I think I spotted Cadwell but I was too b****y cold by that time for conversation. I made for home shortly after that Morgan did his bit.

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Just another quick one?

You might look on this one as an early attempt at an 8 cylinder leaf blower :D

Nice set, love the look of concentration on the drivers faces :D

What is the 'leaf blower' (LOL!) driver holding in his hand?

Hi Tessa

Thanks for looking.

Yes, they very much had to concentrate and in the case of that last image what he I think was holding was the 'route' diagram to get round that "test stage" (in and out & around the cones in the right order) and he messed it up a couple of times - I noticed in many of the cars the drivers had clipped the 'map' to the dashboard or windscreen. But as you can see he had nowhere logical to put it ?

A good set!

Was the "leaf blower" taken in the morning or the afternoon. If it was the afternoon I have several very similar pictures!

Hi Robert

Thanks. Yes, I only arrived at lunchtime so all my images were 'afternoon'.

That car (Berliot ???) had a lovely engine "note" and its straightout exhaust pipes made me think more the likes of the Napier Railton and Mother Gun and the other Napier engined red bodied one, in looks and noise. But its turning circle was appalling!

Thanks, I thought it probably was a route map, and yes, there doesn't seem to be a place to put it in that car.

I've been co-driving in rallies/oldtimer events and can imagine how hard it would be for the driver to do both jobs :)

It was bitter, I need to get better shoes/boots for standing around in such conditions. For the first time I kept my gloves on and they just about were OK for control of the camera. I think photog gloves are like camera bags we/I am always on the lookout for the perfect pair?

Hi Mark & welcome to POTN

Its always nice to ID who is who and I must admit I failed to find a program ~ I think the cold addled my brains

Here is another from your run showing a nice bit of 'loading' on that nsr tyre.

Incidently I think you are driving a PB (Google is wonderfull). Wasn't it a PB "special" that got a land speed record in the 1930's ???

PS How did you stumble on POTN and the motorsports fora?

Het thats another cracker thank you!
I was just searching for some pics of the weekend on google and up popped this forum! I m learning the game with my camera, especially at the motorsport events so its also great to find a forum like this.
Yup the car is a PB 1936, running slightly modified although we had to remove the supercharger just before the weekend as it kept freezing solid! So I was quite down on power for Sunday.
The MG's had a fantastic landspeed history especially at Brooklands, not sure of the model but you could be right about it being a pB. It was great to drive on the banking, they must have been lunatics back in those days!!
Certainly was fresh, I dont think I ever got the cars temp above 70 degrees so you guys must ahve been freezing. Great to have you there enjoying the event. I m now looking forward to the speed events, Hills and Sprints that start in April!!

Cheers

M

Glad you like them ~ I do like to try to get to motorsports events if/when/ as I can (I have posted a few various images hereabouts) and Brooklands is local to me so apart from the weather Brooklands should be a no brainer for me!

Google seems to "crawl" POTN very quickly :)

Ref VSCC events - I tried to subscribe to the email on the site but it has a problem. It would be nice to visit some of the upcoming events?

Incidently, for a while I owned a ZB Varitone Magnette. Not really 'vintage' I know but IMO was the last of the true MG . Somewhere I have my MGCC Gymkhana Winners plaque of 1976 :D

Ref: camaera using ~ this is great forum for learning/sharing/discussing all such matters ~ enjoy it here.

PS It is a pity the VSCC media guys do not post better quality images on the VSCC site. They have their © on the images (which of course we as photographers "own" as soon as we click the shuter) but the file size and compression does the image image quality a dis-service :(

Fly fishing gloves is what you want and what I've been using for the past 4 or 5 years. The ones I have are windproof, water proof (to an extent) and allow you to uncover the tips of whatever combination of fingers you want to operate the camera. The palms and fingers of the gloves are also 'grippy' which makes holding onto your camera and lens so much easier.

Simon.
