Had a thought and it may help with buying lenses, but how about we set up a thread that hold images taken with various lenses. They say the hardest test a lens can do is shooting stars.

What would be cool is we could get photos taken of different celestial objects with different lenses so we can see how they compare.

We could do like,
Milkyway shot, with a 10-22mm EF-S lens then post an untouched image maybe cropped to 100% so others who are looking at that lens can see what it can do. I guess finished images would work as well. For example:

Orion Wide Field:
Canon 24mm f/2.8 lens stopped down to f/4 90 sec exposures at ISO 800 and a modded 20D camera.

I can provide 100% crops later

I would really like to see what a 10-22mm EF-S lens can do as well as a 300 f/2.8L IS USM a 300mm f/4L (either IS or non) as well as other lenses. If you got samples from lenses please post here :)

That could work if everyone uses the same camera cause different cameras will produce different results . Meaning i have a 6.3mp , others have 8mp and some 10.1mp . The 10.1 would kill my 6.3 even if we use the same lens . See what i mean ?

Not quite 100% sure what you mean? Are you saying that the higher pixel count cameras should resolve things better then a lower pixel count camera? Because that I can see. A 20D vs a 5D, I think the 5D would produce better results.

But what I am after here is just how a lens performs, if the lens produces CA on a 5D, I would suspect it would do the same on a 20D. Heck, even if someone don't have the same camera as I do comes in and says, "__________" lens works great with a 40D and post a great photo. I guess I am looking for examples with different lenses.

I tried to google image examples and usualy come up empty. Example, one of these days I would like to own a 300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens and one thing I would like to do with the lens is aim it at the skies and see what it can do.

Not a bad idea...I'm hoping some people with 400mm prime lenses come along and show what they're capable of compared to 400mm scopes.

I've got a Canon 10-22mm and over the weekend I serviced my mount, so hopefully it'll be clear soon and I'll take some widefields for you. Is there any area of the sky you're wanting to see? Because I'm rather limited...at 10mm from my current site I can't avoid getting buildings or trees in the frame. :(

Cygnus :D
But thats going to be a wait. Orion should be in prime location and you should be able to get M45 in the frame too. But what ever you can get with it. I would be real interested in 100% crops

I don't think it would make a really big difference between these sensors apart from noise and amp glow in the older models.
It will start to make a difference once you get up past the 15mp to 21mp sensors.

Well i suppose if you only want to know what others can do and produce and their review would be just fine but my 6.3mp 300D will not produce the same image as a 40D having 10.1mp . So if if will not produce the same image then how can it fairly be judged how good a lens is ? Thats my question . I know any of the "L" series lens would improve my 300D images , even my Sigma 135-400mm APO does that but how can it be compared with a 40D using the same lens ?

I was going for the Moon/Venus/Jupiter shot with my 400/5.6L but got beaten by a mosquito swarm and I had to leave...
