Re: Invitation to Participate in the Canon Inkjet Printer Usage Survey
_______________

Win a Canon digital Mini DV camcorder & a Canon inkjet compact photo printer!!

===============
Canon Inc. invites you to participate in the Canon Inkjet Printer Usage Survey
===============

This e-mail is being sent to users of Canon i250, i320, i350, i450, i455, i475D, i550, i560, i70, i80, i850, i860, i900D, i950, i960, and i9900 inkjet printers who registered their printers with Canon USA, Inc. Canon USA, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Canon Inc.

---------------

If you believe you have received this e-mail in error, or if you do not want to be contacted by the Consumer Imaging Group/Printer Division of Canon USA, Inc., please see the section headed "If you don't want the Consumer Imaging Group/Printer Division of Canon USA, Inc. to contact you in the future" at the end of this e-mail.
===============

Dear Canon inkjet printer users,

Thank you very much for choosing a Canon inkjet printer.

Canon is conducting a survey regarding inkjet printer usage ("Survey"). The purpose of the Survey is to gather data from your printer and analyze that data, along with data gathered from the printers of our other customers, to provide an accurate picture of the usage of consumables for these printers (i.e. ink and paper) and to help us develop products that will better meet your needs and the needs of our other customers. A detailed description of the data to be gathered from your printer is set forth later in this message.

Participating in the Survey is simple. A program for the Survey will automatically gather usage information, such as data on ink and paper usage, from your printer. The entire process will only take a few minutes. This program will reside on your computer only as long as necessary to gather the usage information from your printer; it will not access files or other information from your computer, including any personal information.

To thank you for participating in the Survey, a drawing will be conducted in order to select four Survey participants at random to receive one each of the following:

- Canon Optura60 Mini DV Camcorder;
- Mini DV Camcorder Starter Kit (Case, Tape and High-Capacity Battery);
- Canon SELPHY DS700 Compact Photo Printer;
- Canon Photo Paper Pro 4"x6" 20-Sheet Pack; and
- Canon Glossy Photo Paper Credit Card Size 100-Sheet Pack.

Participate in the Survey for a chance to win one of these prize packages.

Participation details

The Survey period:

12:00 noon EST Wednesday, March 16, 2005 through 12:00 midnight EST Monday, March 28, 2005

Participation requirements:

The Survey is open to legal residents of the United States of America who are 18 years of age or older as of March 15, 2005 and who:

* own one of the following Canon inkjet printers: i250, i320, i350, i450, i455, i475D, i550, i560, i70, i80, i850, i860, i900D, i950, i960, or i9900;
* received this "Invitation to Participate in the Inkjet Printer Usage Survey" e-mail;
* are willing to participate in the Survey during the Survey period listed above; and
* have the following environment necessary for running the Survey program:
- Windows Me, 2000, or XP (including SP2);
- Internet connection via Internet Explorer (4.0 or higher);
- printer connected to the computer via USB (The Survey program won't run in a network environment.); and
- printer driver for the inkjet printer installed on the computer

Prize announcement:

In early April, 2005, four participants in the Survey will be chosen at random from among all eligible entries received. These participants will be advised by e-mail that they are the provisional winners of the drawing and must respond within three weeks of notification with their name, address and telephone number. After winner's eligibility has been confirmed, prize will be shipped to the winner (address within the USA only).

Purpose of the Survey:

The purpose of the Survey is to gather data from your printer and analyze that data, along with data gathered from the printers of our other customers, to provide an accurate picture of the usage of consumables for these printers (i.e. ink and paper) and to help us develop products that will better meet your needs and the needs of our other customers.

The Survey procedure:

Access the Survey page using the URL above. Follow the instructions to run the Survey program. The Survey program will automatically gather information from the inkjet printer connected to your computer and send that information back to Canon. It is not necessary to save the Survey program to your computer's hard drive. The entire process will only take a few minutes and the Survey program will be automatically deleted from your computer upon completion. Even if you save this program to your computer's hard drive, it is not self-activating; it can only work if you start it up during the Survey period.

The Survey items:

- Amount of ink consumed
- Number of sheets fed through the printer
- Type and size of papers selected
- Number of times the printhead cleaning was done
- Setup date
- USB serial number

In addition to the Survey items listed above, this program will gather other printer device information such as, but not limited to, printhead alignment status and any error codes. The Survey will not gather or transmit any information about your computer, any personal information or what you have printed. Since the data gathered in the Survey does not include any personal information and cannot be linked to the e-mail address you entered in the web page, it will be impossible to identify any user from the data gathered. Therefore, we cannot respond to any inquiries from Survey participants asking us to release the data gathered.

Operating environment:

The Survey program requires the following operating environment in order to run:

- Windows Me, 2000 or XP (including SP2);
- Internet connection via Internet Explorer (4.0 or higher);
- printer connected to the computer via USB (The Survey program won't run in a network environment.); and
- printer driver for the inkjet printer installed on the computer

If you do not have the operating environment described above, you will not be able to participate in the Survey.

I think so. It had too many words and not enough pictures, so I didn't read it. I think I trashed it.

Just because I have gotten quite a few emails lately that are cons - from banks that I don't even have accounts at. Better safe than sorry.

I got it too;

I haven't done anything yet because the email address where it originated is not in Canon's domain; it's anonIncInkjetProductsOperations@dlblair.com (external link).

I didn't trust it..

A lot of companies use third parties to conduct surveys.
