Just noticed when adding contrast to a sky that there's 4+ white areas that I suspect my be dead pixels. One of them is 2 or 3 times the size of others

Might these be dead pixels - it doesnt look lie dust to me?

In the 100% crop below you can see three close together, there is another one further left and no doubt others on the rest of the sensor

If so which is the best UK service centre to send it to??

I seem to remember that if you put the camera in sensor cleaning mode for a few seconds that they get mapped out?? It might pay to do a search on this because I'm sure it is the thing to do.

Anyone else confirm?

Urban Legend. I tried that about 100 times on both by bodies and it didn't do a damned thing.

Ditto what Don said.... not a thing you can do about it except clone it out in photoshop.

That or shoot RAW and use a free program to zap 'em if you don't have Lightroom (which zaps 'em automagically).

I do shoot RAW

isnt there an upper limit of four on dead pixels before they'll do something about it?

I have no idea. I don't even care since LR zaps 'em and there are free programs to take care of 'em as well.

Lots of reports of hot/dead pixels on 5d2 it seems... :(

I live in the UK too and have some hot pixels as well - if you send yours off for UK repair please let us know how you get on!

Worked for me on my 40D.. left the lens attached turned it to manual clean actuated the process, left it that way for over a minute and and all the dead (red) pixels were mapped out. Some say you have to take off the lens and use a body cap didn't matter for me. I did put a eye cup cap on to keep out extraneous light.
What you have do not look like dead pixels.

I did it for 5 minutes on my 1D II and it didn't change. Still have hot pixels. Going to let it go for another 20 minutes.

I still think it's a myth.

It didn't work for me neither
I found the following message in another forum from someone working inside Canon...

I commented on this subject a while ago in RG's forums. The gist of it is that Canon Inc. does not confirm that the new firmware for the 5D has anything whatsoever to do with pixel remapping in the camera. My personal tests with a single camera before and after installing 1.0.5 indicate that there was no change at all in the number of hot pixels found through the usual torture test of shooting a blank frame with the camera's body cap on, then analyzing the images with the levels slammed to the edge. So to reiterate, we are not claiming this as a "feature."

Moreover, as an FYI, there is no such thing as a permanent fix for hot pixels. They can and will develop over time, no matter how many times the sensor is remapped. Yes, it can be annoying, but it's also unavoidable.

At the same time, Canon Inc. has indicated that it has no plans to release pixel mapping software to customers, so the only available solution for this problem is sending the camera to a Canon Factory Service Center. Don't shoot the messenger, I am just telling you the way it is, as opposed to the way some of us might like it to be.

Best Regards,

It would be much much higher than that,
21000000
and 4 are dead...
That is about 0.00002% failure rate, It is very normal
Mine has at least 10-20 dead, I don't care....
