When I scan the list of Nikon prime lenses, esp. 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 135 f/2, I see none of them have the ultrasonic AF-S focusing system. In fact, none of Nikon's primes lenses do. Does that mean that none of the Nikon primes will focus as fast or accurately as Canon's 85 f/1.8 or 135L?

I'm mainly interested in sports photography.

Once you get longer than about 70mm, Canon wins the race both in focus speed and IQ. Ok, a very general statement.

What it means is that those non AF-S Nikkors won't auto focus at all on certain of Nikon's cameras. So, if you are mostly interested in shooting with primes, you'll probably want to plan to buy one of the higher-end Nikon cameras.

Nikon have just released a new 50mm AF-S f/1.4G - Not exacly a 'sports' lens though (unless you are close to the action)

From my understanding Nikon cameras (D300, D3, D700) are more accurate AF as well as fast AF even when compared to Canon 1 series. That is why so many wildlife folks are moving from Canon to Nikon. Not sure about the focussing on the lenses you mention. I would rent the combo and see for myself. Lens or camera body alone doesn't tell the complete picture.
