this is the power mac that my friend has and his video card is fried. does anyone know if i can use any agp video card or does it have to be mac specific?

also, could i use nvidia or does it have to be ati?

---------------
the video card is an ATI 9600, i would like to order a new card to replace it and if it doesnt have to be mac specific, then i could purchase from newegg.com

the mainboard on the G5 accepts the same video cards as PCs... only problem is that the metal panel or whatever to which you need to lock it down with is on the opposite side; hence you need a mac specific graphics card.

oh and as for AGP or whatever.. I thought it needs to be PCI-x.. but after reading the link you posted, it looks like the mainboards on the G5s were only AGP.. I must be thinking about something else.

been a long time since i've installed any sort of hardware on a G5; that's all based on forlorn memory, so don't take my word as gospel.

Unfortunately it has to be Mac specific. If he's looking for a new card, AGP cards for the Mac are a bit harder to find new. There are a lot of flashed PC cards out there that will probably work (I say this since I've never used a flashed PC card).

yea i figured.... thats kinda dumb cause i can find a pc one for 80% less than a mac specific one.

The one my friend has is an older model and pci-e was just getting popular when this g5 was out...
