I notice that Canon's 24-70L can close focus to about 6" at 70mm. How well would this do for close-ups of flowers or bugs? I was thinking about using one for cherry blossoms in a few weeks. Any usage tips to share or advice?

It's only 1:3.5 ratio, macro lenses are typically at least 1:1. Professional wedding photographer, solution architect and general technical guy with multiple Amazon Web Services certifications.
