We just returned from 3 weeks in sunny south Florida, our second trip there in 2008. We hope to go at least a couple times in 2009. It's amazing there and the absolute perfect vacation for us. My in-laws have a house there and they aren't really the type to go out and do things, so they enjoy hanging out with the kids while my husband and I get to go out kid-free!

1. Unfortunately Bailey was sick the first few days of our trip, so we just hung out. She and daddy took a little walk on the dock when she was feeling better and then our vacation actually started. Rented a couple lenses, this was taken with the 70-200 f2.8 IS.

2. Not a person, but I grabbed this early in the trip when I happened to wake up early and I knew it would never happen again. Sunrise!

3. Steep learning curve on my rented 24-70. It's much heavier than my 50mm. Not super happy with this, but I love pictures of them together... even if they're a bit soft.

4 & 5. Our first beach trip. On an island off Bonita Springs, FL. We took a boat there, which I think the kids enjoyed more than the actual beach!

6 & 7. Second beach trip... Sanibel Island.

(love that little bit of sand on her nose)

8. I had to FIGHT for this one... but I dragged my tripod and remote with me to the beach. Fort Myers Beach this time (my favorite beach there) and forced the family to cooperate for our first family picture in many years. Our last professional photo was in December of 2005 and Bailey wasn't even born yet. I thought it was a complete loss because the light was almost gone and the lens was having trouble grabbing focus with no direction from me, but after hundreds of outtakes, I managed to save one! It needs a bit more work before I can print it big, but I'm so glad to have it.

There are a bunch more, but since the limit is 8, this is where I must stop. The rest are mostly just cliche anyway. But if you care, they're on my flickr (external link).

I used flash on the family photo because I needed it to even out the light. The sky was still bright, but our backs were to the light. I exposed for the sky and put the flash in ETTL and let it do its thing (I may have set it at -1/3 to compensate since there was nice bounceback coming from the sand -- I'm not sure what series that one was from - some were without compensation).

The rest of the beach shots were no flash because the kids were facing full sun... just exposed for them. Light on them was the same as the light from the sky. You can tell that it started to get a little harsher up near the corners, but I try to keep the brightest parts of the sky out of the shots and it usually helps. If they had been in different light, I would have used flash for sure.

I feel like such a dork with the cliche sunset silhouettes, but hey... we don't get to the beach very often, let alone one that faces the exact perfect direction and has intense sunsets like those... so I had to do it. :)

It may be cliche, but I'm a total sucker for those types of shots....especially when done as well as yours. :)

these are ALL great Andrea. I got to 4&5 and thought I'd chosen my favorites, but they just kept getting better. I can't chose. :)

Wow, great job! I love #1 and #7. We have made a trip to SW Florida for the past seven years, usually in February. Beautiful area and with today's high in Minneapolis around -5, your photos are particularly enticing :)

Gorgeous! I love so many of them.. but 2, 4, & 5 are my favorites. :)

Nice work! Bet you'll be buying your own 70-200 this year.... hard not to want one after playing with, huh? It's on my wish list. :)
