Nice work! I really like the first image (the water), one of the more unusual shots I've seen. And your ladybug shot is really nice, I love the composition, good work!

thanks for the comments guys! i figure i need to look into extension tubes because i want to get more magnification, but for now, i got quite the lens to learn my way around.

anyone have any suggestions for improvement?

Very nice! I'd never guess these were your first attempts at macro, they all look very experienced to me.

I can't offer any improvement tips offhand as you seem to have a good grasp of things already, but expect to do lots of experimentation, especially once you start looking at ways to boost your magnification (i.e. with extension tubes, or reversing your 50mm onto your 100mm, for example).

yeah, i mean, obviously with these shots there were plenty of throw-aways but everyone experiences that :)

as far as reversing my 50mm how much more magnification can i achieve with that, and where can i purchase a reverse mount adapter for my 100mm macro to my 50mm?

I got my male-male reversing ring on eBay for about $8 shipped; just look up "macro reverse ring" and look for the correct size (the 100mm macro is 58mm, so you'd need a 58mm to whatever size your 50mm lens is - the EF 1.8 is 52mm, and the EF 1.4 is 58mm).

I'm far from certain about the math, but I think the general rule is that the new magnification is the focal length of the "host" lens (the one attached to the camera) divided by the reversed lens is the new magnification (so that would be 2:1 if you reversed a 50mm onto a 100mm). Some people use zooms as well, but you will get better results with primes, and I suspect even better results if both primes are macro primes.

I think there are a few more threads on this subject in the Macro discussion forum; go take a look and see what other methods you can try out (teleconverters, diopters, etc.)
