Are they identical in size and interface IE: buttons?

I know that the MIIn has a larger screen, which may effect the layout of buttons, but I am not sure about that

1D IIN can also write different file types to different cards.

yes. physically the only difference is the N body has a larger LCD screen. all controls are in the same locations and work the same.

Mark II N has a larger buffer as well
