Hi guys

Before I hit the road for next two World cup races in Zauchensee, Austria, here's few things from last few World Cups in Zagreb, Croatia, and Maribor, Slovenia. As with last 4 races in Alta Badia, Italy and Semmering, Austria, things weren't much better, weather wise, in Zagreb and Maribor either. Temperature was around -15c, so standing on slopes from 8am to 2pm with short 1 to 1.5h break in press center between the runs to send photos, was not to pleasant experience.
Next to that, races in Zagreb and Maribor are worse when it comes to locals. This year FIS made rules much more strict then they were before, and now there's really maximum 30 or 40 photographers (including TV crews) on course. Except in Maribor and Zagreb, where obviously anyone can get photo bib, and all of a sudden you have helluva lot of "Facebook photographers" all over the course. Normally I don't really have problems with them, but some of them have no idea how to behave. No crampons on 45 degree ice rink is more or less their problem not mine, but coming to spot 15mins before the race (which is against FIS rules anyway) and yelling to everyone else, who were standing there for hour already, to move since they want >MY< spot, which is obviously better then this what they would get, makes me push them down the hill ;) Considering most of them are without crampons, or they at least don't know how to use them, just small touch with finger into middle of chest would suffice :)
But anyway... photos I guess :) Here they are :)

Men's slalom race in Zagreb was really crappy one. It was night race, with start of first run at 15:30. It was foggy all morning, but 10mins before start fog lifted and we were pretty happy about it. Unfortunately happiness disappeared 3 or 4 minutes before start, when fog, thicker then before, came back. For first 30 skiers, I moved from really great position shooting 3 gates above me with 300/2.8 to 70-200/2.8 shooting gate next to me. And when shooting to side, you can forget about cool photos, since you always have crappy red safety net as background. But...

Ooops... 8 photos from two races in Zagreb means no more space for photos from Maribor races. But nothing to worry... they will come too :)

And as always... all sorts of comments are welcome, especially comments about this what you don't like, or what you would like to see it done different :)

Take care,
Primoz

Great shots Primoz. No complaints on cropping this time :D
I heard there was some accident where skier hit photogs bag and hurt his/her knee. Do you know was the photog on approved place shooting?
The place looked fine but on tv they commented how dangerous it is to have photogs so close. Funny how some people can judge without knowing all the facts

That was in GS on Semmering before New year. I was standing just on the opposite side of course where Carolin Fernsebner fall. She did slide down and "hit" photographer, but she got injured before already. It sure didn't help hitting his bag either, but main thing for injury wasn't photo bag.

But then again... we (FIS and photographers) have "gentleman's agreement" where it says what to do and what not to do. And keeping our skis, bags or any other equipment inside of safety nets is something we are not allowed to do. To be honest I can't remember at the moment, if that guy was standing there during media inspection already or not. "Media inspection" is when race director or his assistant goes down the course (one hour before start) and checks, if we are standing on safe places or not. If he thinks we are on dangerous places, he moves us, and we don't have anything else to say except to pack our stuff and move. And it's right thing. Those guys (Skardal, Pieren, Hujara) were top level skiers on their own, so they can see track much better then anyone of us, and therefore they know what is dangerous and what is not.
Anyway... I have no idea if that guy was there already during inspection, and he got ok from Kronner or Mayer (assistant RDs for women races) or not. But that place looked a bit dangerous for me, even though I didn't really expect someone will fall there, since track before gates where Carolin fall were pretty much straight down without any technical problems. And on top of that, photos from that place were crappy. I actually went to check it, but background was sh**ty and it was way too much from side, so I moved to the other side :)

Ditto that. The skier from another planet, very weird but very cool.

The Razzoli shot really got my attention. Very different from you and I like that. The rest are as solid as ever but what I really appreciate is your anecdotes as to teh world of FIS. I don't shoot skiing here (in Ohio, the best we can do is bumper hitch!) so it's interesting to see how the working media operates in other venues. Thanks and stay warm!
