The best idea is one where you get someone else to do the work. "Let's get Bill to take studio shots of the trees!" is one such idea.

Setup: Two lights to the sides of the camera shooting inside of umbrellas.
One light aiming at the backdrop ("Studio Blue") with a snoot.
One flash on PW+2 radio firing from PW+2 on camera.
Metered at 1/50th @ f/10
Shot graycard at that.
Photos are processed in LightRoom. White Balance selector used on graycard shot. Cropped and resized for posting.
All photos from last night were shot RAW.

I wanted to get rid of shadows but still separate the trees from the backdrop. I'm wondering if I needed to boost the exposure on these or not. If so, why'd it meter as under exposed. Or did I do it right?

And as always, Rule GN.4 is in effect. We don't criticize the models, just the photographer. ;)

I think you need to be closer to the trees, the first one on the left is getting lost in the background. In fact I would have shot that on a white background to get more contrast and bring out the trees detail.
The second one is not good shot composition in my opinion.
The front edge of the table is not doing anything here except to highlight that the shot is not level, as you can see its down at the right side a bit.
Again I think the background color is not helping either. And more detail in the leaves and branches would have been good. You need to move closer to the subject.
