I am unable to use the larger dial wheel to adjust camera exposure during a recent photo shoot. This issue has never happened before and I want to know if any 1Ds MKII users has ever experienced this malfunction.

Problem:
1. Unable to use larger dial wheel to adjust exposure compensation before shot, but I'm able to use larger dial wheel to scroll through images when viewing. This tells me the larger dial wheel function works for all other usage except exposure adjustment. The larger dial wheel is now unable to adjust exposure compensation. Any suggestions how to fix this issue? Is it time to throw out the 1Ds MKII? Please help!:(

I know this is simple but... There is an on/off switch for the large dial next between the dial and the viewfinder. Check to make sure it is set to On. You can use it to scroll through images even when it is set to Off.

Not sure if it is the same, but the MarkIII has 3 power switch positions - needs to be in the top one (the manual uses a J looking character) to have the functionality you need.

Probably not the cause...and you most likely know about this, but just thought I'd mention it ;)

I forgot to mention the switch is placed all the way in the ON position during this malfunction. This is why I'm asking for help. I've never experience this issue before. I need help in fixing it.

Are we talking about the same switch?

Rene Damkot,

You are right! This switch was the source of my problem. lol

I recently looked at the camera and saw that it was off. I've used this camera for many years now and should have known better. I guess I've been too focus on the 1Ds MKIII so I forgot the basic controls of the 1Ds MKII. lol

Thank you!

Yeah. That was the switch I was referring to as well. Don't worry about it. I am ashamed to admit the number of times that I have had that switch flipped to off and couldn't make adjustments. Or have had it flipped to on when shooting manual and changed my aperture with my nose. LOL

I know most pro and semi-pro cameras have these switches... can someone explain why?

I'm just a lowly 400d user so I don't have a manual to read :(

So you don't accidentally change a setting. (for instance when the camera is hanging on your shoulder, bumping into your hip)

I set the wheel (both actually, there's a custom (personal?) function for that in a 1D series) off when I'm shooting in the studio with strobes.
