If Sigma addresses the mid-range softness of the 18-200 OS in this lens, but leaves everything else pretty much alone, this will be the new Disney lens, or at least maybe tied with the Tamron 18-270 VC!

Lightrules will have a new super-zoom comparison to make now!

4 SLD (all glass, of course) and 3 Aspherical elements + OS + HSM = 630g! That's pretty light to have so much heavy glass. Interesting. It looks almost identical in spec to Tamron's 18-270 VC lens, minus 20mm on the end and plus HSM both with similar macro capabilities and both with 18 total elements. If it's priced competitively, it should do well. The Tammy uses 2 LD elements, for comparison.

If it can come within a few percent of the optical performance of my 18-55 IS/55-250 IS combo, I'm sold. I also hope they address the OS issues that were reported with the 18-125 OS HSM. Namely, the IS keeps going for 30-60 seconds after you take your finger off the shutter button.

The Canon 18-200 IS is pretty good, and it is $500 now. I would think they would need to at least match that price or less. Sigma beats the canon on paper, but most people would feel a lot more comfortable buying a Canon product.

From what I can see, it looks to be similar to their 18-125 DC OS HSM...which lacks ring HSM and FTM (they use their proprietary micro USM). So while they have a nice marketing phrase here with "HSM", it by what I can tell from the DPR release, will not have FTM and be just like their 18-125 OS HSM. I found the AF there to be not much more of an improvement over their conventional micro motor units.

If it's optically good for a superzoom (specs/glass look good), it will be a good seller since Sigma has a large audience globally. But it leaves me wondering if I will give up my Tamron 18-270 VC that gives me the best stabilization unit of the bunch and 6 years warranty (versus Sigma and Canon's 1 year warr). I don't have a lot of complaints about the Tamron, so the new Sigma will need to show me something "special" for me to replace it. But the new micro HSM unit should make a small difference (at least somewhat quieter).

I had no idea that was the case. I am looking for an all-in-one zoom for my wife's XT, but that is some discouraging information. :(

I never liked Canon's micro-USM and found it to be almost as jittery, buzzy and annoying as the AFDs.

You will. And I am first in line to purchase it from you.

Pre-emptive dibs here.

LOL... :) Seriously, the AF is going to have to be much faster and the optics at least as good for me to give up the 18-270 VC I have now. 6 years warranty is a biggie for me  And Sigma will only give us 1 yr. :o

Wow. I did not realize that Tamron held 6 years for all their lenses. I assumed (foolishly) that they did it for SP lenses (ala Sigma's EX warranty extension) only. Oh well, won't be the last time I'm mistaken! ;)

Tom, Tamron carries 6 years warranty on all their USA model (not gray) lenses. Nice eh? http://www.tamron.com/lenses/warranty.asp (external link)
