I'm pretty excited! I already have an SD800 which is fine for a P&S. But I'm looking forward to having something that I can use in a similar way to my DLSRs without the bulk. I'm leaving for Florida this Saturday and am taking super telephotos for bird photography. With the G10, I'll have something to cover any other type of photos I want without having to bring a bunch of other lenses. When I saw it had spot metering, I was sold!

Really? Interesting, I guess I never even bothered looking! Regardless, for me it's the combination of manual exposure, RAW, and spot metering. Basically the same way I shoot with my DLSR.

Yup...what he said...'tis definitely a neat machine. Spend the time tinkering with it in front of the manual, and you'll find all sorts of cool features. I find that it acts pretty much like my 30D, without the angst over which lenses to bring, how heavy it's gonna feel after 6 hours of packing it, etc...

Enjoy your trip south. I just cleaned up 3" of fluffy snow, and it's about 5 degrees real-feel temperature.

Regards!
Don

I will have three hours on a plan Saturday and so that will perfect for reading the manual and playing around with the settings. Then I should get plenty of practice on my two week vacation.

Heh, you're 20 degrees warmer than us, my backyard weather station has -14.7 degrees right now. ;)

I was wondering how you like your new camera? Can you choose a focus point like with the DSLR?

Enjoy the G10! I picked one up before the end of last year for the same reasons. I don't always want to carry my DSLR with me and the G10 lets me take great shots but also blend in for street shooting. I plan to use it as a "carry always" camera. It'll be great on the bike as getting out the DSLR is way too much work (well as soon as all the snow is gone anwyay).

Enjoy FL, I'm stuck here in the snow until March break then I get to go to FL myself.

I bought one last week. I take it with me every day as I am out and about. I live in Guangdong Province China. I have a DSLR but do not want to pack that thing around with me every day. There is a tremendous problem with pick pockets and snatch thieves here. Last week while waiting in a bus station the fellow behind me decided he wanted my briefcase that was sitting beside me. As I talked on the phone he gently lifted the bag but I noticed it and after a chase through the bus station and down the street the security guards and I caught him. This is the second time I have had a bag stolen in China. The first time was in McDonald's and the thief got my Fuji S9100. There was no camera in my bag last week.

The G10 gives me a small but very good camera that I carry in a belt case. Even on my belt, in tight places, I keep my hand on the camera. However, it looks like any point and shoot to most people. A DSLR will really draw attention and some of it from less desirable characters.

And it is true people are much more approachable with the G10 or similar cameras than a "big" camera. I miss the low light abilitiy of the DSLR. I was out tonight working on new techniques for shooting street scenes at night with the G10.

This is my first Canon camera and I am very happy with what I am able to do with the camera and happy with the photos.

I just got back online today ... so far the G10 is pretty cool. Feels a lot more substantial than my SD800. I can't remember if I can switch the AF point or not. I did take a few shots in manual mode and that was really nice. The first few days of my trip have just been visiting family so I've mostly used it in green box mode for snapshots, but now that I'm back on the photography part of the trip, I will be using it more in manual mode as a complement to my DSLR. I'm looking forward to hopefully getting some nice landscape and/or interesting touristy shots.

It's a neat camera, eh? Yeah, the AF point can be moved around. The Owner's Manual is full of great info. Open the book and browse through the functions and menus, and have fun.

Regards!
