President Obama's offical Portrait - shot with a 5D

For the first time in history the official Presidential portrait was shot with a digital camera. A Canon 5D was used by photographer Pete Souza.

What are your thoughts on the composition? Quality of image? Lighting?

I think the quality is great. The lighting and composition in my view seem a little lacking. I don't really like the Presidential flag standing with the US Flag, I think it clutters the image. I also am shocked they didn't edit out the lint on his jacket.

I think the flag is distracting as well.

While I personally disagree with many of Obama's proposed policies, I still believe it is an honor to take the official photographs of the president or president-elect. Same goes for the folks who build the new presidential limosine or who prepare the food for the first family -- its an honor to do this for the president, regardless of your own personal political views. Anyone who would refuse these jobs just because they disagree with the president politically are probably far too political anyway.

I work on FE Warren AFB as a base photographer. I know what I make, and I am sure he is in the 60-100k range. The experience and everything else that goes along with that job would be something to cherish. I love my job - but to be able to have that D.C experience would be awesome.

Is this some NYC photographer making thousands a day? No - but the paycheck comes twice a month - and can be guessed within pennies. I like that security/certainty.

If that's what you "believe" you obviously don't know enough about politics. People that work in an Administration actually are not paid a lot of money (compared to what they would make in the private sector) and they work their tails off.

Maybe they don't get paid on payroll, but I assure you, politicians are wealthy my friend. I actually worked within the Obama Campaign team, and I've seen the actual bank account balances of these guys. Hence the reason they're able to have multi-million dollar campaigns...

Senators usually make about 170K on payroll, yet they have 3-4 million dollar homes; and without a penny of debt to there name.

This would be a bang up idea, having the White House photographer sharing his thoughts on POTN. Maybe one of the mods or members who live in the DC area could extend an invitation to Mr. Souza to become a member here. Jon, are you out there?
