Hello

Does anyone shoot sports with 5d Mk2? Can you post some pics?

I shot a little surfing yesterday, if that helps.
I used a 300 f/2.8 + 1.4xTC EXIF should be in tact.

I have a 1d, but I've been using my 5d-II for everything, to see if I can hopefully sell the 1d. To weigh my opinion, I'm not a pro, and barely a rank amateur, so I don't NEED anything beyond an XSi. I don't shoot a lot of sports, but want to see how much I miss my 1d when I do.

The 5d-II did pretty well. AF locked fast enough, and held accurate focus. I had no OOF shots out of over 100. I used only the center point, didn't try the off-center yesterday.

I only took single shots, no bursts. I had it set to burst mode just in case. But, 4fps is so slow I had my finger off the trigger before a second image was taken(unlike my 1d when set to 6fps, where I occasionally get an unintentional 2nd shot).

Shutter lag was an issue at first, but I adjusted. Need to anticipate the shot a bit more than with the 1d. I swear the 1d goes back in time when you pull the trigger :). The 5d wasn't bad, and the lag was predictable.

Images came out great. I shot a lot of back-lit faces, and they pushed nicely, even JPGs(I shot both RAW and JPG at different times yesterday). 21mp is too much for my uses, but it was nice that even my cropped images will print 8x10 or larger.

Very nice pictures JC4! I wasn't planning to use my 5D Mk2 to do any sports (I have my 30D for that) but I now might have to give it a shot.:D Did you try using AI Servo at all?

cwphoto shoots awesome sports photos with his 5DII, and he has two 1DIIIs :p. It's a very capable camera.

Thanks. I did use AI-servo, and it worked great for surfing. I was stopped down to f/6.3, so I can't tell how accurate it was, but every shot was in-focus. A slight bit of motion blur, I wasn't shooting fast enough(between 1/640th and 1/800).

So far, BIFs in AI-servo have been less successful, when the birds are flying head-on. I get a lot of misses, that I think should be hits. It could be me, so don't read too much in that one.

The 5dm2 does a decent job for most things. I shoot college and high school womens gymnastics. On the really fast moving stuff, the 5dm2 can't and won't keep up. That's where the 1dm3 body comes out. But on the slower moving stuff, the 5dm2 does fine. This is with the 200/2.0 L EF IS lens - and that's probably Canons FASTEST focusing lens.

I try not to push the 5dm2 over 3200 iso. 6400, imo, looks a bit too noisy.

Also, for the 5dm2 users, try processing with CS4 raw conversion instead. C1 4.6 and DPP 3.5.2 makes the images look too soft and plastic like. CS4 - quite a bit more faithful.

Took my 5D MKII to the Hornets vs Mavericks Game the other night. The American Airline Center relaxed their restriction on lens longer than 4".

Showed the screeners my 5D MKII with 24-105mm and had no problems.

bauerknight - it looks like the camera focused on the player up front and not the shooter. Did you have it on center point focus?

Yes it was on center point focus. Should I have set it on auto?

Nope. You're on the right track with the center point, but when the exposure was taken, it focused on the player that was up front, not the one holding the ball. He must have gotten in the way at the last second!
